Abstract

The Nigerian education system plays a crucial role in shaping the nation's future. However, over the years, there have been concerns about the effectiveness and relevance of the curriculum in preparing students to face rapidly changing global challenges. This research aims to explore the weaknesses within the current Nigerian curriculum and propose strategies to reshape it to drive sustainable national development. It is a comprehensive and systematic literature review, a critical step to thoroughly understand the challenges within Nigeria's curriculum and identify potential improvement strategies. This research allows for a comprehensive synthesis of scholarly articles, governmental reports, and educational publications, establishing a strong foundation for subsequent methodologies. The study begins by analyzing the current state of the Nigerian curriculum, highlighting its limitations and shortcomings. It delves into how the curriculum inadequately addresses critical skills and competencies needed by the 21st-century workforce, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and digital literacy. The study emphasizes the need for continuous evaluation mechanisms and feedback to ensure the effectiveness of the modified curriculum. Regular assessments and monitoring systems should be implemented to measure the impact of curriculum changes and identify areas for improvement. By addressing these deficiencies and integrating relevant and practical skills, the curriculum can better prepare students to face future challenges.

Abstract

Secondary schools have long been plagued by issues of poor maintenance, resulting in dilapidated infrastructure, limited resources and a subpar learning environment for students. To address this pressing issue, it is crucial to adopt strategic approaches that focus on improving maintenance practices and ensuring the long-term sustainability of these schools. This study aims to analyze the key challenges faced by Nigerian public secondary schools in terms of maintenance and presents innovative solutions that can help build a better future for education in the country. The research method uses Systematic Literature Review (SLR). A literature search was conducted through academic databases, such as PubMed, ERIC, and Google Scholar. It is essential to establish a comprehensive system for monitoring and evaluating the maintenance of public secondary schools. The government should allocate a significant portion of the education budget to address infrastructure maintenance and ensure that funds are properly utilized. This investment will help to improve the physical condition of schools and create a conducive learning environment for students. By involving the community in the maintenance process, a sense of ownership and responsibility can be fostered, leading to better maintenance practices.

Abstract

The success of a nation relies heavily on the quality of teachers and their efforts. To improve educational standards, efforts should focus on teachers' effectiveness. However, inadequate facilities and lack of training hinder teachers' effectiveness in public senior secondary schools. This study aims to examine the predominant quality assurance practices, determine teachers' effectiveness, and investigate the relationship between these practices and teachers' effectiveness in Kwara State public schools. The study used a descriptive survey design to survey 7700 teachers in Kwara State's public senior secondary schools. The Krejcie and Morgan table was used to select 367 respondents. Data was collected using the Quality Assurance Practice Questionnaire (QAPQ) and Teachers' Effectiveness Questionnaire (TEQ), with reliability coefficients of 0.74 and 0.71 using the Cronbach Alpa method. The study found that evaluation was the most commonly used quality assurance practice in public senior secondary schools in Kwara State (3.16%). Teachers' effectiveness was high (3.05%), and there was a significant relationship between quality assurance practices and teachers' effectiveness (F=0.474; p< 0.05). The study concluded that teachers' effectiveness is largely dependent on the full usage of quality assurance practices such as capacity building, supervision, physical facilities, and accreditation. The sustainability of these practices will increase teachers' effectiveness. It was recommended that the level of quality assurance practices should be above moderate, with regular capacity building, supervision, physical facilities and accreditation.
