This study attempts to explain in detail the historicity of Tuan Ma from an ethnohistoric perspective, including Portuguese domination and power in Larantuka; Tuan Ma's role as a relic of the continuity of traditional beliefs and Catholicism in Larantuka; and the sacredness of Tuan Ma for the people of Larantuka. By using the ethnohistorical approach as a research method, it is expected to answer this research in the perspective of culture and history in Larantuka. This research shows that Tuan Ma is not just a religious symbol, but also a cultural heritage that represents a dialogue and synthesis between local traditions and global influences. The sacredness of Tuan Ma continues to live as an integral part of the identity of the Larantuka community, reflecting the sustainability and transformation of tradition in the face of changing times. This research is expected to be a stimulus for other studies on religious symbols and local traditions that can survive and thrive in the context of globalization and modernity.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the capacity of local tour guides in the Lasem Heritage City area, Rembang Regency, Central Java. The main problem faced by the tour guide community in Lasem is the lack of official and standardized guides that can be used as a common reference in conveying information to tourists. This has an impact on inconsistencies in the delivery of historical and cultural narratives, as well as reducing the quality of the tourism experience. In addition, some guides also still need to improve their communication skills, interesting guiding techniques, and digital media-based promotional strategies. In response to these needs, this community service activity was carried out through a series of collaborative processes between academics and the local community, starting from compiling the content of the “Jelajah Kota Pusaka Lasem” guidebook, training in delivering history-based narratives, to strengthening promotional skills and the use of social media. This activity also involved the cultural community and active guides in the process of compiling materials, validating content with local historians, and conducting guide simulations as a means of practice. This activity uses the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method which places the community as the main subject. The results of this program showed that the mentoring activity succeeded in increasing the understanding, confidence, and quality of narrative delivery by tour guides. The guidebook that was compiled has become a common reference that strengthens the consistency of information and the tourist attraction of Lasem as a heritage city. This program also opens up space for ongoing collaboration between local stakeholders in developing community-based cultural tourism in a more systematic and sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of Christianization in the Malang residency in the 20th century, which is related to Dutch colonial practices. This study uses a historical method, this study has several stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study indicate that Christianization in Malang cannot be separated from the long history of the arrival of Catholics with Portuguese traders in Maluku in 1511 and the spread of Christianity (Protestantism) through the activities of the VOC in the 19th century. This study focuses on the development of Christianity in Malang which was influenced by European migration, infrastructure development, and socio-political changes during the colonial period. Through cultural and educational acculturation carried out by the Dutch colonial government became the main strategy in the spread of this religion. The Immanuel Protestant Church of West Indonesia (GPIB) Malang, which was founded in 1861, is an important symbol of Christianization in Malang and until now functions as a service center for Christian congregations. This study concludes that the colonial government and missionary institutions worked together to integrate Christianity into the social and educational structures in Malang, which not only increased the Christian population but also formed a sustainable religious community through the establishment of churches, especially Immanuel Church, as one of the symbols of this change. Keywords: Christianization, Church, Dutch Colonialism and Malang.
