Abstract

Background: Gingival hyperpigmentation can occur in active smokers with high frequency. The current treatment is surgical. Therefore, researchers found a new breakthrough by creating a minimally extensive treatment, namely gel preparations. Combination of turmeric (Curcuma domestica) and moringa leaf (Moringa oleifera) extract that has the potential as a tyrosinase enzyme inhibitor. The extract will be made in a gel preparation. This study aims to determine the most optimal concentration of the gel. Method: This study used an experimental method. The gel preparation was made with various concentrations of turmeric extract and moringa leaf extract, namely F1 0.1%: 2%, F2 0.5%: 4% and F3 0.9%: 6%. Followed by testing the physical and chemical properties. Chemical properties in the form of pH, physical properties in the form of organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesiveness and spreadability by measuring the diameter of TB (No Load), B50 (Load 50 g), B100 (Load 100 g) and B150 (Load 150 g). Results: The results showed that F1, F2 and F3 were homogeneous with dark brown color, distinctive smell of moringa leaves and increasingly dilute form with each additional concentration with pH (F1) 7.99, (F2) 7.71 and (F3) 7.58. The spreadability of gel preparation F1 (TB) 2.7, (B50) 2.8, (B100) 2.9, (B150) 3.1; F2 (TB) 2.8, (B50) 3.1, (B100) 3.3, (B150) 3.5 and F3 (TB) 4.2, (B50) 4.6, (B100) 4.7, (B150) 5.1 based on these observations it is known that F3 meets the criteria for spreadability at a load of 150 gr. Conclusion: Based on this study, it can be concluded that F3 gel, a combination of turmeric extract and moringa leaf extract, has the most optimal formula because it almost meets all the requirements for gel preparations.

Abstract

Periodontitis continues to be a debilitating problem when improperly treated. This condition is associated with certain periodontopathological bacteria, including Porphyromonas gingivalis. Chlorhexidine, while proven effective against bacteria in the oral cavity, carries unwanted side effects. Curcuma domestica and Moringa oleifera are domestic herbs that possess several therapeutic effects. This study aims to investigate the antibacterial effect of the combined two herbs in extract gel. This experimental study used three combination formulas of C. domestica: M. oleifera (0.1%:2%, 0.5%:4%, 0.9%:6%) as the test group and chlorhexidine as the positive control group. The antibacterial inhibition disc method was used to determine the antibacterial activity in each group. The statistical analysis was carried out with Kruskal-Wallis and continued with the Mann-Whitney test. In this study, extract gel combination of Curcuma domestica and Moringa oleifera at concentrations of (0.1%:2%; 0.5%:4%; 0.9%:6%) can inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis with average inhibition zone diameters of 12.50 mm, 14.49 mm and 16.66 mm, respectively. The inhibition zone falls in the strong category. The control group showed a mean inhibition zone of 20.96, which is classified as a very strong inhibition zone. Although there was a significant p-value between the test and control groups, the results suggested the potential of the extract gel as an alternative for treating periodontitis with lesser side effects.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: SAMURI, Lansia, Merokok, Kanker Mulut, Lesi Rongga Mulut  ABSTRACT  Oral cavity cancer is a type of cancer commonly encountered worldwide, with increasing prevalence, especially in Indonesia. Temanggung Regency, as one of the largest tobacco-producing centers in Central Java, shows a high incidence of suspected oral cavity lesions that are often overlooked by the community. Early detection approaches are necessary to reduce the incidence of oral cavity cancer, which is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages. This study aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the community in Kledung Village, Temanggung Regency, especially among elderly individuals with smoking or tobacco-chewing habits, regarding early detection of oral cavity cancer through the SAMURI method. The community service approach implemented includes socialization, education, and application of the SAMURI method to 15 elderly participants. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge about the dangers of smoking on oral cavity health, as well as their ability to conduct self-examination using SAMURI. The use of educational media such as posters and pocket books was also proven effective in reinforcing the participants' understanding. This program is expected to serve as a model for early prevention of oral cavity lesions in other communities, particularly among elderly individuals at high risk due to smoking habits.  Keywords: SAMURI, Elderly, Smoking, Oral Cancer, Oral Lesion
