Abstract

This article explores the contributions of 8th-9th century Egyptian scholars and their influence on contemporary hadith studies. While the fall of Bagdād is often seen as a period of decline for the Muslim world, this study argues that Islamic regions, including Egypt, remained intellectually active. This article aims to examine the development of Hadith in Egypt as one of the regions that developed after the fall of Bagdād. The datas of this qualitative historical research were collected through documentation, with primary sources including historical texts of ulamā in 8th-9th century and hadīth works by Egyptian scholars. The analysis was conducted using content analysis and presented narratively and descriptively. The study employs synchronic and diachronic approaches to analyze Egypt’s social, political, and ideological dynamics while exploring the evolution of hadith studies. The findings reveal that Egyptian 8th-9th century scholars significantly advanced various genres, including commentaries on primary hadith texts, poetic works on hadith sciences, biographical texts, commentaries on ‘ulūm al-hadīth, and takhrīj. They influence contemporary hadīth studies through the canonization of works and their impact on modern scholars.[Artikel ini membahas kontribusi ulama hadis di Mesir abad VIII-IX dan pengaruhnya terhadap kajian hadis kontemporer.

Abstract

Yūsuf al-Qarḍāwī is a contemporary scholar known for his strict approach to the application of ḥadīth ḍa‘īf. He introduced two additional conditions beyond the three established by Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī, making a total of five criteria for the application of weak hadiths. These two additional conditions distinguish al-Qarḍāwī’s perspective from that of other scholars. This study focuses on two main issues: first, Yūsuf al-Qarḍāwī’s views regarding the applicability of weak hadiths; and second, the implications of his criteria for the acceptability of such hadiths. This research is qualitative and employs a library-based approach. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques. The primary sources consist of three works by al-Qarḍāwī: Kayfa nata‘āmal, Thaqāfat al-Dā‘iyah, and al-Muntaqā min al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb. The data were analyzed using content analysis, and the results are presented descriptively. The five conditions proposed by al-Qarḍāwī lead to the exclusion of several categories of weak hadiths from practical application, including munkar, matrūk, those that independently prescribe specific actions, and ḥadīth shādh.

Abstract

Abstract

The study of living hadith, while demonstrating the advancement of hadith scholarship, nonetheless leaves considerable room for further development. Moreover, researchers' awareness of the reality of hadith as a foundation for rituals still requires methodological strengthening, particularly concerning whether interpretations arise from the reception of practitioners within the tradition (emic) or from the researcher's own analysis (etic). This article aims to explore more deeply the concepts of emic and etic in living hadith studies, as well as their application in this field of research. Concretely, two fundamental questions form the basis of this study: First, how are emic and etic constructed in living hadith research? Second, what are the patterns of distribution of emic and etic within the dynamics of living hadith studies? These questions are examined using a systematic literature review approach, with data sourced from Google Scholar using the keywords "living hadis," "living sunnah," and "living hadith." The study data were limited to journals accredited by Sinta or Scopus and published between 2021 and 2025. Through data exclusion, 37 relevant articles were identified. The findings reveal four patterns of engaging with hadith: emic (16 articles), etic (16 articles), emic-etic (4 articles), and traditions not based on hadith (one article). Furthermore, within the five-stage research framework proposed by Saifuddin Zuhri, an etic approach is applied in the analysis of practice, an emic approach in the examination of reception and text, and an etic approach in the study of transmission and transformation.

Abstract

Para ulama memiliki banyak pandangan tentang penafsiran al-Qur’an.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic jurisprudence faces the enduring challenge of reconciling the authority of the Prophetic tradition (Sunnah) with the evolving realities of the modern world. This article examines this problem through an analysis of the systematic hadith hermeneutics developed by the twentieth-century Indonesian scholar Tengku Muhammad Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy. Using a qualitative hermeneutical approach, the study analyzes his principal works, Pokok-Pokok Ilmu Dirayah Hadis and Falsafah Hukum Islam, to reconstruct his framework for distinguishing between legislative (tashri‘) and non-legislative (ghayr tashri‘) hadith. The findings show that this distinction rests on the foundational premise of the Prophet’s dual capacities as a divine messenger (rasūl) and a human being (basyar). This conceptual division delineates a universally binding domain of law, primarily in matters of worship, from a non-binding sphere of worldly affairs in which human reason, empirical knowledge, and contextual understanding play a central role. The paradigmatic examples of the command to pray and the incident of date-palm pollination illustrate the practical application of this binary framework. The study concludes that Ash-Shiddieqy’s hermeneutical model constitutes a coherent and systematic methodology that integrates contextual reasoning within Islamic jurisprudence and serves as a principled framework for achieving the higher objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah).
