Abstract

This article presents the discourse markers used in speech. It applies qualitative research methodology while analyzes the discourse markers using discourse markers approach. Our aims are to analyze the types of discourse markers based on Biber’s theory and to analyze the functions of discourse markers based on Schiffrin’s theory that found in the speech entitled “We All Are Perfectly Imperfect” (2017). The result shows that there are ten types of discourse markers, five of which are linking adverbials, answer forms, stance adverbials, answer elicitors, and interjections. The linking adverbials dominates the types of discourse markers used by Muniba Mazari in her speech, while interjection is the least-used type. Furthermore, six discourse marker’s functions are found in this speech. Three of them are Marker of Connectives, Marker of Information and Management, Marker of Response. The most distribution of discourse markers’ function is marker of connectives and the fewest is marker of temporal adverb.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze how the verbal and visual aspects in motivational hustle culture quotes make meaning in the quote. The researcher uses a qualitative approach so that the result will be in descriptive analysis. In doing the analysis the researcher uses Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze the verbal aspect and Visual Semiotic of the Barthian and Salience theory and both lean on the Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) as the grand theory. The result shows that from the verbal aspect, among the 30 images that are being used, 21 of them use declarative as the communicative purpose, 9 imperative clauses, 5 relational processes, 1 material process and all of the 30 clauses have Textual Metafunction. Subsequently from the semiotic aspect, there are 17 images that only contain literal meaning and 13 metaphorical meaning. Then 18 of them use cool tones and 19 of the images in conjunction with the photography technique use medium shots.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyse: (1) the portrayal of lower caste people in India in The White Tiger (2021) movie, and (2) the psychological transformation of the protagonist presented in The White Tiger (2021) movie. The researcher uses the qualitative method to examine the problem. The object of this study is movie The White Tiiger (2021). The data used in this study is collected by the researcher through some steps, namely watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. In order to answer the problem statement and draw a conclusion from this study, the selected data is analyzed by the researcher through some steps, namely displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The approach and theory that the researcher uses to analyze the problem is sociology of literature and psychology of literature. The result of this study shows that (1) the portrayal of lower caste as portrayed by the lower caste characters of The White Tiger (2021) movie are depicted through various occurences including poor living condition, unfair treatment and bound by traditions (2) the personality change of the protagonist makes him change from a loyal servant to a disloyal servant.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) Chinese immigrant parenting style in U.S.A towards main character’s psychological condition reflected in Turning Red (2022), (2) the effect of parenting style on the main character’s emotion and behavior is presented in Turning Red (2022). The study uses descriptive qualitative method to analyzed the film entitled Turning Red (2022) directed by Domee Shi as the objective research. The collecting data of the research method includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The analyzing data of the research method by used exposing, explaining, and interpreting. The researcher analyzes the data by uses psychology of literature and parenting style approach in doing the process of the research. The result of the study: the parenting style of Chinese immigrant in U.S.A element within this research. They are firstly, psychological condition which belongs to main character is dominate with the id. It means that the id, ego, and superego are not balanced. Secondly, the effect of parenting style clearly describe on the main character which are convey their emotions in the wrong way, are not good at making decisions, lack self-confidence, and often compare themselves with other people.
