Abstract

This study examines grammatical errors in the abstracts of scientific papers of third semester students of the English language education study program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Science, Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Error analysis is an established method for studying challenges in language learning. Four categories of errors, based on Corder's classification, are omission, addition, improper selection, and incorrect order of elements. Reading and note-taking techniques were used to collect data on grammatical errors made by students in their scientific work, especially abstracts which were then presented descriptively. The study shows that these errors mainly stem from limited knowledge of English grammar, interference from the students' first language, and lack of understanding or mastery of English grammar by the students. The findings emphasize the need for targeted grammar instruction to improve students' academic writing ability, especially in scientific contexts, and offer practical insights for educators in improving writing instruction.

Abstract

In response to the absence of a module for academic writing courses in a multicultural classroom context and the problems of starting to write and finding ideas for academic writing, this research aims to develop an academic writing module that meets the teachers' and undergraduate students' needs and voices. This study employed ADDIE model of R&D carried out through some steps: need analysis, drafting, developing, implementing, and evaluating. In the steps of need analysis, students claimed that reading contributes to getting ideas and building background knowledge of a certain topic for writing. Brainstorming is another voice they proposed to solve the problems. Moreover, they believe that writing essays can be the starting point for writing journal articles. Accordingly, by considering all findings in the initial step, the products of this R&D comprise students’ and teachers’ books. The product's specific characteristics are reading preceding essay writing, brainstorming, the syllabus, the scoring rubric with a detailed description, and academic honesty. The study revealed that integrating active reading into academic writing modules can be pedagogically implemented and enhance both students’ reading and writing skills. The following studies on developing a module for other levels of education can be carried out to further contribute to reading-writing pedagogy.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between the frequency of students watching vlogging and their vocabulary proficiency. As learning media continues to evolve, students are expected to adapt and utilize these media to enhance their language skills. Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning and plays a crucial role in enabling students to initiate communication and express their ideas effectively. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The population consisted of sixth-semester English Education students at UIN SATU Tulungagung, with a sample of 52 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The result showed that the value of rxy = 0.262, while the critical value at the 5% significance level is 0.273. Based on this result, the researcher concluded that there is a low correlation between the frequency of students watching vlogging and their vocabulary proficiency.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at present getting popularly used as the supporting tools of learning. The EFL students use various types of application to support their learning and doing the school assignment and projects. This study is thus aimed at portraying how AI is used as their supporting learning tools. This narrative inquiry is carried out by asking five selected students of English Department of a state university in Tulungagung who used AI to help them completing their final project of writing thesis proposal. The data were collected through interviewing them and reading their notes in July 2023. They were then qualitatively analysed. The results of this study revealed two main points. They do not only use Chat GPT as the most popular AI application, but there are also some other AI applications like Bing Chat, and Grammarly which are used to support their learning projects like writing research proposal. Those application are used for various reasons and usage like using Chat GPT to find framework of research topic, to develop and brainstorm ideas; employing Bing Chat to find review literature; and Grammarly is used to check the grammar error in their research proposal.
