Abstract

Entertainment-Education (E-E) is a powerful communication strategy that integrates educational messages into entertaining content to influence public attitudes and behaviors. This paper explores the role of edutainment in driving social change, particularly in health and environmental awareness, through various media platforms. By analyzing case studies from television, radio, digital media, and social platforms, the paper examines how E-E has been used to address critical health issues such as disease prevention, maternal health, and hygiene, as well as environmental concerns like climate change and conservation. The study also highlights the theoretical foundations of Entertainment Education theory to explain its effectiveness. Furthermore, challenges such as cultural resistance, funding constraints, and accessibility issues are discussed. Finally, the study recommends incorporation of local cultural narratives, collaboration between stake holders, utilizing digital platforms for wider reach, feedback mechanism and a structured monitoring and evaluation system to optimize E-E strategies for greater impact in media-driven social change.

Abstract

This study critically examines the politics of international donor support in Nigeria through a post-colonial lens, exploring its implications for national sovereignty, economic development, and governance. The research investigates how foreign aid, while often framed as a development tool, perpetuates economic dependency and policy subjugation. Utilising dependency theory and post-colonial theory, the study evaluates the extent to which donor interventions influence Nigeria’s policy autonomy. This study adopts a qualitative approach, utilising secondary data from peer-reviewed journals, books, online materials and case studies. The findings indicate that while international aid has contributed significantly to healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, its effectiveness is often undermined by corruption, weak institutional frameworks, and external policy conditions imposed by donor agencies. Moreover, the study highlights the neo-colonial undertones of donor support, where funding is frequently tied to structural adjustments that limit Nigeria’s self-determination. The study concludes that achieving sustainable development in Nigeria requires a strategic shift towards economic diversification, enhanced transparency in aid management, and increased local ownership of development initiatives. Recommendations include strengthening governance institutions, reducing donor dependency, and fostering domestic revenue generation to ensure long-term economic resilience.

Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of media technologies on communication practices and social change through the framework of technological determinism. The purpose of the study is to analyze how advancements in media technologies influence individual and societal communication, thereby affecting cultural norms, political engagement, and economic development. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, this research evaluates both the positive and negative consequences of media technology adoption. The findings reveal that while technological determinism posits that technology fundamentally shapes social structures and behaviors, there is also significant evidence supporting the role of human agency in mediating media use. This dual perspective emphasizes the complexity of the relationship between technology and society, suggesting that media technologies not only drive societal transformation but also interact with human choices and cultural contexts. The implications of this study highlight the necessity for scholars and practitioners to adopt a nuanced understanding of media technologies' influence, encouraging further research that integrates both technological impacts and human agency. Ultimately, this research contributes to the broader discourse on the interplay between technology and society, underscoring the importance of critically examining the role of media in shaping communication practices and fostering social change.
