Abstract

Employed within the Batak Toba community, Mangongkal Holi represents a longstanding tradition that continues to be actively practiced. Functioning as a unifying element, this tradition fosters cohesion amongst the geographically dispersed Batak Toba people across Indonesia. Through a combined approach of literature review and interviews, this research delves into the concept of divinity inherent within Mangongkal Holi. The author's meticulous analysis unveils Mangongkal Holi as more than just a ceremonial practice; it serves as a profound expression and reflection of the human connection to the divine. This tradition embodies esteemed values such as reverence and dedication towards the Creator, while simultaneously reinforcing the bonds of fraternity among the Batak people scattered throughout Indonesia.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the habit of Bengkulu people who use Gamat art on several important events such as marriage and other traditional ritual events. The purpose of this research is to describe Gamat art in Bengkulu society. The methods used in collecting data for this research are literature study and questionnaires. There are 3 important questions that become the instrument of this research, namely: What is Gamat art? How is Gamat art present and recognized in the lives of Bengkulu people? What is the function and meaning of Gamat art for the people in Bengkulu? The results of the study show that Gamat art is a performing art that combines a combination of vocal and instrumental music typical of Melayu, which is known, present and united in traditional ceremonies and annual rituals of the Bengkulu community. In addition, it was found that Gamat art has functions and meanings for the people of Bengkulu, including: means of entertainment, communication and integration or unification.AbstrakPenelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh adanya kebiasaan masyarakat Bengkulu yang menggunakan kesenian Gamat pada beberapa peristiwa penting misalnya perkawinan dan acara ritual tradisional lainnya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kesenian Gamat dalam masyarakat Bengkulu. Metode yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data-data penelitian ini adalah studi pustaka dan kuesioner. Adapun 3 pertanyaan penting yang menjadi instrumen penelitian ini, yaitu: Apa itu kesenian Gamat? Bagaimana kesenian Gamat hadir dan dikenal dalam kehidupan masyarakat Bengkulu? Apa fungsi dan makna kesenian Gamat bagi masyarakat Bengkulu? Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesenian Gamat merupakan seni pertunjukkan yang memadukan seni musik gabungan dari seni vokal dan instrumental khas Melayu, yang dikenal, hadir dan menyatukan dalam upacara adat dan ritual tahunan masyarakat Bengkulu. Selain itu, ditemukan bahwa kesenian Gamat memiliki fungsi dan makna bagi masyarakat Bengkulu, antara lain sebagai: sarana hiburan, komunikasi dan integrasi atau pemersatu.
