Abstract

This study aims to investigate the dynamics of contemporary Qur’anic exegesis through a comparative analysis of the intellectual contributions of Amīn al-Khūlī and Nashr Hamīd Abū Zayd, two reformist scholars who prioritize linguistic and literary methodologies in Qur’anic interpretation. The primary objective is to delineate the methodological convergences and divergences between these scholars, who share a mentor-mentee relationship. Employing a qualitative research design with a comparative framework, this study traces their conceptual developments as articulated in their principal works. The findings indicate that Amīn al-Khūlī, influenced by Western literary criticism, foregrounds literary devices in Qur’anic interpretation, emphasizing linguistic structures, rhetorical techniques, and literary composition. Conversely, Nashr Hamīd Abū Zayd adopts a more expansive hermeneutical approach that incorporates the social, cultural, and historical contexts of revelation, while also accentuating the significance of classical Arabic, metaphor, and symbolism in the transmission of divine messages. The study’s implications highlight the necessity of cultivating an interpretive methodology that is responsive to contemporary intellectual currents while remaining grounded in Islamic scholarly traditions, thereby contributing to the advancement of Qur’anic studies in the modern era.

Abstract

In contemporary social reality, misogynistic thought is not only gaining strength across various levels of society but is also developing dynamically among students. This discourse often emerges through textual interpretations of hadiths which, often unconsciously, have the potential to discredit women. In response to this tendency, Muslim feminist scholars such as Fatima Mernissi have proposed alternative methods for reading hadiths perceived as misogynistic. Therefore, studying the reception of misogynistic hadiths becomes crucial, especially within Islamic student organizations such as Ikatan Pelajar Muhammadiyah (IPM), to emphasize that hadith studies continue to evolve in line with contemporary contexts. This research seeks to answer two main questions: how is the reception of misogynistic hadiths manifested among IPM members, and what factors underlie the formation of those reception patterns. This study adopts a qualitative field research approach using Focus Group Discussions and interviews as data collection methods. The analysis employs Stuart Hall’s reception theory, which posits that meaning is not fixed but is constructed through the interaction between the text and the reader, shaped by their social, cultural, and personal backgrounds. Based on the analysis of four selected hadiths concerning female leadership, women invalidating prayer, women entering hell because of a cat, and women as sources of misfortune the findings reveal that the majority of IPM members (75%) adopt a contextual (oppositional) reading, while a smaller portion (25%) engage in a textual (dominant) reading. These patterns of reception are influenced by the socio-cultural dynamics present within their organizational and educational environments.

The study of hadith has developed very rapidly. This is characterized by the existence of applications or software that can facilitate and support the study of hadith. So that the application must be developed in such a way that it can be attracted and used by the wider community. One of these applications is the 'Catalog of False & Original Hadith' developed by Fariz Abdul Azziz. This research falls into the category of qualitative research because it includes research on literature. This study will examine the 'Catalog of False & Original Hadith' application, starting from the background of its development, the various features of this application, the pattern of presentation of hadith as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the 'Catalog of False & Original Hadith' application. This application can be found on Google Play Store and can be downloaded for free on smartphones so that it can be used in various places and can be used at any time. This application contains traditions that are considered false/maudhu' and are presented in different themes. The presentation pattern is very interesting. The themes are organized in a structured manner and serve as a practical guide for the users of the app to get to know the various traditions that are considered false/maudhu'. More interestingly, the content in this application is presented in Malay. However, this does not diminish the essence of this application to recognize various false traditions. With this application, it can provide convenience for people at all levels in learning about false traditions.

Abstract

This study examines the position and representation of sacred text studies in undergraduate and graduate theses within the Religious Studies Program at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Indonesia, and explores the factors associated with their relatively limited presence. The study is important in light of the growing prominence of empirical and interdisciplinary approaches in Religious Studies, which may influence students’ research orientations and the balance between textual and contextual inquiry. This research employs a qualitative approach with descriptive survey elements. Data were collected through document analysis of 100 thesis titles produced between 2020 and 2024, a checklist-based questionnaire administered to 30 respondents, and in-depth interviews with five lecturers and three students. The data were analyzed interpretatively to identify thematic patterns, associated factors, and students’ perceived academic support needs. The findings show that sacred text studies appear in only seven titles, or 7% of the total theses analyzed, while most student research is oriented toward sociological, cultural, interreligious, and other contextual approaches. Their limited representation is associated with structural constraints, methodological challenges, and students’ preferences for topics perceived as more practical and manageable. The study implies that strengthening textual methodology training, improving access to primary sources, and enhancing expert supervision may help create a more balanced academic environment. The originality of this study lies in its micro-academic focus on student thesis practices, offering an empirical account of how disciplinary orientations are shaped within a specific Religious Studies program.
