Abstract

Virtual Music's Boundless Collaboration in the Digital Age Collaboration in Music has grown rapidly along with the advancement of digital technology, creating a new boundless space for musicians from different parts of the world. “Collaboration Without Borders: Virtual Music in the Digital Age” examines how digital platforms, music production software, and streaming technologies enable musical collaboration across geographies, cultures, and genres. Through the use of virtual musical instruments, remote recording, and cloud-based applications, musicians can now collaborate in real time by combining different sonic elements to produce more innovative and experimental works. In addition, this study also explores the impact of virtual collaboration on the music industry, including increased accessibility, utilization of global market potential, and challenges faced in terms of copyright and distribution. Virtual music collaboration provides musicians with an opportunity to express themselves more freely, share creative ideas, and access global opportunities without being hindered by physical boundaries.

Abstract

Purpose:Balinese karawitan is a cultural heritage characterized by its intricate musical structures and profound philosophical meanings. However, its conventional composition process, transmitted orally and through direct interaction among musicians, faces limitations in documentation, experimentation, and efficiency. This study aims to explore the potential of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) as an alternative medium for composing Balinese karawitan, while also examining the opportunities and challenges that arise from integrating digital technology with gamelan traditions.Method:This research employs a qualitative approach using literature study. Data were collected from academic journals, conference proceedings, and books relevant to the use of DAWs in traditional music, particularly Balinese gamelan. The analysis focused on the role of DAWs in timbral experimentation, rhythmic visualization, digital documentation, remote collaboration, and hybrid innovations, and compared these aspects with conventional practices of karawitan composition.Result and Discussion:The findings indicate that DAWs offer significant potential as tools for creative experimentation, long-term digital archiving, and cross-cultural collaboration. They also enable hybrid innovations that merge traditional gamelan instruments with modern electronic elements, thereby expanding the artistic spectrum of Balinese karawitan. Nonetheless, challenges persist, including the limited authenticity of digital sound reproduction, cultural conservatism, unequal technological literacy among traditional musicians, and intellectual property issues regarding gamelan sampling. Therefore, DAWs should be regarded as complementary rather than substitutive to conventional methods, ensuring that Balinese karawitan maintains its cultural authenticity while adapting to the dynamics of modern music technology.

Purpose: The topic of this research is the use of MIDI in recording and musical performances in general, and in Bali in particular. This research focuses on how MIDI technology makes the process of recording and musical performances run effectively and efficiently. Method: The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach. The phenomenon of the use of MIDI in recording and musical performances is the subject of study in this research. Documentation studies were conducted by researching musical recordings and performances in Bali. The data analysis technique used is qualitative descriptive analysis, namely analyzing data that has been obtained through qualitative descriptive analysis. Result and Discussion: The recording process using MIDI will be more effective and efficient, because it allows for maximum results without requiring a lot of costs to present musical instruments such as bass, orchestra, drums, and others. Likewise, in musical performances, composers can use MIDI as an alternative to real instruments with various media such as keyboards, pads, MIDI guitars, and others.
