Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the management of hazardous and toxic waste (B3) at PT. X, a spare parts manufacturing industry in Surabaya. Hazardous waste management is a major challenge in this industry due to its hazardous, corrosive, flammable and environmentally harmful properties if improperly handled. Data was collected through field observations, interviews with relevant stakeholders, and analysis of regulations and company reports. The results show that PT. X's level of compliance in hazardous waste management is 61.1%, which is considered fair but not ideal. Key deficiencies were identified in the areas of packaging, labelling and storage. The waste packaging does not fully match the waste characteristics, while the labelling is fragile and lacks complete information. In addition, the storage area is located within the production area, making it unsafe and difficult to access. To improve the management of hazardous waste, the study recommends the use of appropriate packaging materials, durable labels with comprehensive information, and the design of storage facilities that meet regulatory standards. Implementing these recommendations is expected to improve the effectiveness of hazardous waste management, reduce pollution risks and protect both the environment and human health.

Abstract

Increased activity in shopping centres generates liquid waste that has the potential to pollute the environment if not properly managed. The assessment was carried out by measuring the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant in treating wastewater quality parameters such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and pH in accordance with the quality standards set by the government. The research methodology included field observations, laboratory analyses and interviews with STP managers. The results showed that the results of the wastewater quality standard test at the wastewater treatment plant of Mall Y had met the domestic wastewater quality standard, but Mall X had parameters that did not meet the quality standard. Factors such as the level of efficiency and treatment capacity of the STP and the level of maintenance of the equipment can significantly affect performance. These findings are expected to provide a reference for shopping centre managers to improve wastewater management and comply with applicable environmental regulations, as well as contribute to sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

Noise pollution from construction projects is a critical issue, especially in high-density areas such as the ASN 2 housing projects in IKN. In this study, noise levels were measured at 29 predetermined points using a Sound Level Meter (SLM) during three time intervals to assess variations in noise intensity. Noise mapping was performed using the Surfer 24 application to visualise the spatial distribution of noise and identify areas exceeding the noise threshold of 85 dB, as regulated by Permenaker No. 5/2018. The results showed that several locations exceeded the permissible exposure limits, with Daily Noise Dose (DND) values exceeding 100%, and these areas were classified as hazardous. Mitigation measures include technical controls (equipment modifications and noise barriers), administrative controls (shift rotation and warning signs) and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as earplugs. These measures aim to protect the health of workers and reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Abstract

Vegetation cover plays a vital role in climate change mitigation by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) through natural photosynthetic processes. This study assesses the effectiveness of vegetation cover in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in RW 08, Gunung Anyar Tambak Sub-district, Surabaya. Data were collected through vegetation surveys and carbon stock calculations using allometric equations and referring to SNI 7724:2019. The results show that the total GHG emissions of 4,836.4 tons CO₂e/year (from a population of 2,140 with 2.26 tons CO₂e per capita) are still lower than the existing vegetation’s carbon sequestration capacity of 7,267.9 tons CO₂e/year. However, with a projected population growth of 0.82% per year, emissions are expected to surpass sequestration capacity by 2075, reaching 7,274.94 tons CO₂e/year. To prevent a shift to carbon deficit status, the study recommends planting high carbon-sequestering species such as Pongamia pinnata and Albizia chinensis. Those types of tress are chosen due to their properties such as high carbon sequestering, low maintenance, non-invasive, and adaptive to the urban conditions.

Abstract

Work in shipyards is characterized by high workload, intense physical activity, and extreme environmental conditions. These conditions have the potential to cause fatigue, which may negatively impact performance, health, and occupational safety. This study aims to analyze the relationship between working hours and the level of fatigue among shipyard workers at PT X in Surabaya. The research was conducted from June 10 to 18, 2025, involving 37 active workers as the population, with samples selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and health examinations, then analyzed using Pearson correlation test with Minitab 18 software. Fatigue was measured based on six indicators: physical exhaustion, decreased concentration, mood instability, persistent drowsiness, lack of enthusiasm, and forgetfulness. The analysis showed a very weak correlation between working hours and physical fatigue (r = -0.004; p = 0.982), and a similarly weak correlation with concentration (r = -0.268; p = 0.108). However, the lack of enthusiasm variable showed a significant correlation in the 12-hour work group (r = 0.348; p = 0.035). This indicates that work motivation is more sensitive to long working hours than physical complaints. The conclusion of this study highlights that extended working hours can reduce motivation and potentially trigger chronic fatigue.

Abstract

The shipyard of PT. X generates a huge amount of hazardous trash from ship repair activities, such as sandblasting waste, spent oil, used paint cans, and cleaning cloths. The purpose of this study is to classify and appraise B3 waste management operations, as well as to evaluate their execution. Data were gathered from observations, measurements, and interviews with the person in charge of Hazardous Waste Storage at the shipyard of PT. X. This study uses four stages in its implementation method, namely data collection, data processing and analysis, withdrawal, and provision of recommendations. Then the data will be compared with the applicable regulations. The average percentage of scoring was 73.375% with the achievement of "GOOD". However, the aspect of B3 waste storage needs to be improved because it got a low score of 56% with the achievement category of "FAIR". The same thing also happened in the aspect of packaging and container of B3 waste which only got a score of 37.5% with the achievement category of "POOR". With low scores for these aspects, it will result in the risk of environmental pollution, endanger the health and safety of workers, and can damage the company's reputation because it has violated existing regulations. Therefore, it is necessary to make improvements to improve the suitability of Hazardous waste management at PT. X based on applicable regulations.

Abstract

Bromo is one of Indonesia’s premier tourist destinations, renowned for its unique biodiversity, including Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanica), a symbolic flower of mountainous ecosystems. However, increasing tourism activities and human interference have threatened the conservation of Edelweiss habitats. To address this challenge, faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Jawa Timur, in collaboration with the local community of Bromo and international universities, conducted an Edelweiss planting program on September 26, 2024. This initiative was part of the Adjunct Professor program and the International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST) 2024. The program achieved a seedling adaptation success rate of 85%, contributing to improved soil stability in the planting areas. Beyond ecological impacts, the initiative successfully raised environmental awareness and fostered active local community participation in conservation. The collaboration among academics, the local community, and international partners highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder approaches in environmental preservation. Despite challenges such as unpredictable weather and the need for long-term monitoring, the program serves as a model for community-based conservation initiatives in other sensitive ecosystems.
