Abstract

Selanjutnya memberikan pendampingan.

Abstract

Conversational maxim non-observance frequently occurs in adolescent interactions and plays a significant role in constructing implied meaning in everyday communication. This study examines the use of Gricean maxim non-observance in the film Mean Girls (2004) by focusing on how characters employ flouting, violation, and opting out strategies to negotiate power, humor, and social positioning. Unlike previous studies that mainly emphasize the identification and frequency of maxim violations, this research highlights the pragmatic functions underlying non-observance in competitive teenage discourse. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method using the film script as the primary data source. Data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques, resulting in 16 utterances containing non-observance of conversational maxims. The findings show that flouting is the most dominant type with 11 cases (68.8%), followed by violations with 4 cases (25%) and one instance of opting out (6.3%). Flouting the maxim of Quality is commonly used to express sarcasm and indirect criticism, while violations function as tools of manipulation and false politeness. Opting out serves as a face-saving strategy in certain interactions. These findings indicate that maxim non-observance functions as a pragmatic strategy to maintain dominance, reinforce exclusion, and manage social relationships among adolescent peer groups.

Abstract

This study explores the use of social deixis through address terms directed toward Diana in the biographical film Spencer (2021). As a pragmatic phenomenon, social deixis reflects hierarchical relations, politeness strategies, and identity negotiation within discourse. Employing a qualitative-biographical approach, the research analyzes utterances from the film’s script, classified according to Levinson’s (1983) framework of absolute and relational social deixis. The findings reveal that address terms function systematically across four categories: differentiating social levels, maintaining politeness, signaling social identity, and enhancing sentence effectiveness. These linguistic markers demonstrate how institutional authority is reinforced through honorifics such as Your Royal Highness and Ma’am, while intimate terms like Mummy highlight Diana’s identity. From a biographical lens, the study shows that language becomes a site of tension between Diana’s institutional role and personal self. The research contributes to pragmatic studies by illustrating how address terms reproduce power relations and fragment identity within monarchical discourse.

Abstract

This research examines whether using AI-generated feedback enhances learners' pragmatic competence and how they engage with intelligent feedback during task-based communication. The study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design with 60 undergraduate EFL students divided into experimental and control groups over eight weeks. Results indicated that learners in the experimental group significantly outperformed learners in the control group in the pragmatically appropriate use of language, politeness strategies and contextually appropriate use of language. Additionally, the analysis showed that immediate and adaptive AI-generated feedback led learners to notice their mistakes, self-repair, and repeat their revisions in cycles. Qualitatively, learners described the AI environment as supportive, flexible, and less anxiety-inducing, which helped them feel more confident in their language use. This study also shows how AI-powered CALL environments can help learners develop L2 pragmatic competence by providing personalized, interactive feedback. Finally, these findings describe the pedagogical possibilities of intelligent feedback systems within a systematically designed instructional approach to support pragmatic instruction in EFL contexts.

Abstract

Despite the growing prevalence of cross-cultural celebrity interviews in globalized entertainment media, existing pragmatic research has predominantly examined either mono-cultural interactions or applied single theoretical frameworks, leaving the communicative complexity of hybrid cultural identities in Western talk show contexts insufficiently explored. The intersection of Korean hierarchical indirectness, Australian casualness, and American entertainment conventions within a single interaction represents a particularly under-examined configuration in politeness scholarship, creating a significant analytical gap that the present study seeks to address. This study examines politeness strategies employed in a celebrity talk show interaction between Jimmy Fallon and Ros from BLACKPINK, applying both classical and contemporary politeness theories to analyze cross-cultural communication in media discourse. Adopting a qualitative descriptive design, the research draws on the complete transcript of the interview as its primary data source, comprising 42 coded utterances systematically analyzed through Brown and Levinson's politeness framework alongside contemporary extensions including rapport management theory and the concept of politic behavior. The findings reveal that positive politeness strategies dominate the interaction at 50%, reflecting the genre's emphasis on rapport-building and audience engagement, while negative politeness strategies constitute 33%, primarily through hedging and indirect questioning. Bald on record strategies appear in 12% of utterances during task-oriented segments, and off-record strategies comprise 5%, employed for humorous effects. The analysis demonstrates how Ros's hybrid cultural identity Korean, Australian, and international manifests in sophisticated code-switching between different politeness norms, balancing Korean-influenced indirectness with Australian casualness. Jimmy Fallon adapts typical American talk show conventions to accommodate cross-cultural dynamics, demonstrating cultural sensitivity alongside enthusiastic entertainment. The study confirms that successful celebrity interviews require collaborative face-work and dynamic adjustment of linguistic strategies across changing interactional demands, contributing to pragmatic theory while offering practical implications for media professionals, intercultural communication practitioners, and scholars interested in K-pop's global media presence.
