Abstract

This paper is aimed at analyzing literary devices used to establish the sense of dislocation in Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. The research study uses objective approach to literature using E.M. Forster’s analytical tool and nomenclature to novel that is formulated in Aspects of the Novel. As the results demonstrated, dislocation is established through: 1) juxtaposition of the character’s history and 2) Hispanicization of the main character’s identity. The character’s “history” emphasizes the contrast of the main character’s life prior to the narrated events. Contradictions are apparent in the main character’s internal dialectic between being a scholar and becoming a soldier. The second approach to dislocation is caused by linguistic and cultural barrier barrier between Anglophone and Hispanophone characters demonstrated through deliberate Hispanicization. Keywords: dislocation; novel; Ernest Hemingway; character analysis.

Abstract

This paper is principally aimed at analyzing the theme of Richard Russo’s Empire Falls in its relation with the socio-economic context of its publication in 2001, namely the economic recession that characterizes the earliest decade of the 21st century. The analysis will be based on historical approach’s assumption of the correlation between literary works and social context in which they are produced. Intrinsically, the novel is dissected into two levels. They are surface level (form) and deeper level (content). The results of the analysis are in the form of philosophical speculations of the novel, which are believed to follow the mood of the early 21st century, including 1) disillusionment to social mobility, 2) incredulity to human agency, and 3) romantic tendencies. This novel’s reaction to the decline of capitalism in the early 21st century seems to be similar to early romantic reaction to the rise of capitalism by returning to nature and resorting to external forces whether divine entity or otherwise. Keywords: 21st century novel; American economic recession; romanticism.

Abstract

This study examines the process of Muslim female identity formation through a comparative reading of the characters Faten in Laila Lalami's novel Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits (2005) and Arissa in Shaila Abdullah's novel Saffron Dreams (2009). Responding to the tendency of existing research to view identity as an end result, a form of resistance, or a social position, this study addresses the relative lack of attention to how identity is gradually formed throughout the characters' life journeys. This study integrates Muslimah Narratives, the Bildungsroman, and Postcolonial Feminism to examine character development, diasporic experiences, religious identity, and colonial power relations in shaping the characters' identities across different diasporic contexts. The findings reveal two contrasting patterns of identity formation. Faten represents a negative Bildungsroman, in which religious idealism and personal agency are gradually eroded by economic uncertainty, illegal migration, and patriarchal-colonial power structures, resulting in self-disruption and arrested maturation. In contrast, Arissa exemplifies a transcultural Bildungsroman, in which trauma, Islamophobia, and loss become catalysts for emotional and spiritual growth through reflective religiosity and narrative agency, particularly through writing. This comparative analysis demonstrates that the identities of Muslim women in the diaspora are neither static nor homogeneous; rather, they are shaped by legal status, material conditions, and access to symbolic spaces of agency. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Muslim women's identity formation in diasporic contexts and highlights the subjectivity of Muslim women's literature beyond reductive stereotypes of victimhood or resistance.

Abstract

In Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s Naomi, the complex image of female identity is constructed in the interaction between Joji Kawai and Naomi, a young lady to whom male desire, Westernised modernity, and patriarchal power all contribute. The challenge that this study takes up is that Naomi is commonly read as a modern woman or moga, but her identity is mediated through Joji’s first-person narration. This study attempts to explore how the female identity of Naomi is produced via the male gaze and unreliable storytelling. This study combines a qualitative literary method with a close reading approach. The data were extracted from selected narrative sections, character descriptions, and dialogues in the novel that indicate Joji's perception, control, and interpretation of Naomi. The data were studied via the lenses of male gaze theory, unreliable narration, narratology, and the concept of identity creation. The results imply that Naomi is not produced as a stable and self-defined female subject but as a figure constructed through Joji’s desire, fantasy, envy, and patriarchal gaze. His gaze places Naomi as an object of beauty, education, possession, and worry, over and over, and his self-justifying narration makes his story unreliable. The study finds that the picture of Naomi as attractive, manipulative, childlike, or dangerous should be regarded as a creation made through a biased male narrative perspective and not as an objective truth.

Abstract

This paper investigates the paradox of language and repression in Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, focusing on how the narrative persistently avoids describing Edward Hyde in precise, objective terms. Despite Hyde’s centrality to the plot, characters repeatedly fail or refuse to articulate his physical appearance. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s “repressive hypothesis,” the study argues that the narrative’s avoidance of descriptive language constitutes a form of discursive repression, a regime that limits what can be said, yet paradoxically stimulates more discourse. Using close textual analysis grounded in narratology and Foucauldian theory, the paper identifies a formal pattern in which descriptions of Hyde emerge only in vague, affective terms followed immediately by disavowal or narrative deferral. These moments of muteness and subsequent verbal excess suggest that repression does not silence but incites discourse. The study further argues that this dynamic is not a narrative flaw but a structural feature serving both the detective and gothic genre conventions. The repression of descriptive language sustains suspense while reinforcing thematic concerns about the limits of rationality and the boundaries of the knowable self. Ultimately, Hyde’s indescribability is not a gap in the story but the engine of its discourse. His mystery is not maintained by silence, but by the repeated failure to describe him.
