Main Findings: The results showed that Grammarly significantly improved the writing performance and overall achievement of the experimental group, with their mean scores surpassing those of the control group. The findings suggest that integrating Grammarly into writing instruction can positively influence student performance. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides valuable insights into both lecturers and students by investigating how feedback and evaluation processes facilitated by Grammarly impact the quality and development of academic essays, the study highlights the tool's potential to enhance the writing process. Specifically, it examines the effectiveness of real-time corrections, suggestions, and feedback provided by Grammarly in helping students improve their writing skills.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aimed to explore and determine the politeness strategies employed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte during the Inquest of the Blue-Ribbon Committee on the Philippine War on Illegal Drugs. Methodology: A qualitative research design was used, specifically utilizing discourse analysis to examine the politeness strategies employed by President Rodrigo Duterte during the Inquest Proceeding. Data was gathered through video transcription and translation. These data were analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s in 1987 politeness strategy framework to form discourse implications and conclusions. Main Findings: Results revealed that President Duterte employed all the politeness strategies during the Inquest, namely: bald-on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness and off-record strategy. Findings also showed that Duterte’s dominant use of Bald-On Record strategy mirrors his authoritative and assertive nature, projecting a straightforward and decisive leader. Meanwhile, his limited use of Off-Record strategies displays a strategic balance between explicitness and subtlety depending on the audience and context. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides valuable insights into the role of politeness strategies in political discourse, offering a deeper understanding of how language shapes power dynamics and public perception in high-stakes settings. This also suggests how educators can meaningfully integrate Duterte’s politeness strategies in discussing persuasive communication, public image construction, and the influence of authority in political settings and debates.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: To investigate students' communication habits, know the causes of maxim flouting, and offer practical suggestions for enhancing class conversations. Methodology: This study used a qualitative research design, specifically discourse analysis, to investigate the flouting of conversational maxims in classroom interactions among Grade 9 Maroon students at Esperanza National High School. The study's participants comprised 30 Grade 9 students from Esperanza National High School's Maroon section. Purposive sampling was used and the data are collected through observation and audio recordings. Main Findings: The study revealed that flouting conversational maxims is widespread in classroom settings, especially among Grade 9 Maroon students. During discussions, students flouted all conversational maxims. The Maxim of Relationship (Relevance) is the most flouted maxim. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes originality by examining the systematic flouting of Gricean maxims in real classroom interactions among Grade 9 students, a context underexplored in pragmatic research. Unlike previous studies focusing on teachers or digital platforms, it highlights how humor, indirectness, and over-explanation function as both challenges and learning opportunities, offering practical strategies to enhance classroom communication.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study is to comprehensively explore the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and second language (L2) writing education. As AI technologies rapidly advance, they are increasingly integrated into educational practices, particularly in language learning environments. Methodology: This study used a descriptive qualitative research design to explore the impact of AI on L2 writing among students at the University of Southern Mindanao. Thirty students participated, with 25 in individual interviews and 5 in a focus group discussion. Participants had used AI writing tools extensively and were enrolled in undergraduate programs with at least intermediate proficiency in English or their L2. Main Findings: The study found that students' adoption of AI in L2 writing depends on its perceived usefulness and ease of use. AI offers opportunities to enhance writing quality but also presents challenges, including negative effects on critical thinking, writing process, and confidence. Despite these challenges, students found ways to overcome them, emphasizing the need for ethical integration, originality, and independence. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study uniquely explores AI's transformative impact on second language (L2) writing, focusing on both its benefits (enhanced writing quality, personalized learning) and challenges (impacts on critical thinking, confidence, and independence).
