Abstract

Background: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, generally called emesis gravidarum. Emesis gravidarum is among the most common discomforts experienced during early pregnancy, and it is complained about by 50-70% of pregnant women within the first 16 weeks. The impact of unmanaged emesis gravidarum can lead to the mother's body becoming weak, a pale complexion, and a drastic decrease in urinary frequency. Health cadres, as key figures in society with knowledge and skills in assisting with the management of first-trimester maternal emesis gravidarum, are expected to provide support to pregnant mothers in addressing these complaints. Methods: This community service used a clinical approach of lectures, discussions, and demonstrations for 98 health cadres and pregnant women in the South Klaten Community Health Center area. Conducted from May to July 2023, the program consisted of four monthly sessions totalling 12 hours, incorporating a pre-and post-test design to assess knowledge improvement. Evaluations began from the second session onward. Results: After training on lemon aromatherapy to alleviate emesis gravidarum in first-trimester pregnant mothers, the knowledge of the health cadres increases. This improvement can be observed through pre- and post-test scores, where the average pre-test score was 5-7 and the post-test score increased to 8-10. The outcome of this community service project is a scientific publication in an accredited national community service journal. Conclusion: Training for health cadres effectively to enhance their knowledge of lemon aromatherapy for reducing emesis gravidarum in first-trimester pregnant mothers.

Abstract

Background: Anemia in adolescent girls is a health problem that is still commonly found and has an impact on decreased learning concentration, productivity, and reproductive health. One non-pharmacological alternative that can help increase hemoglobin levels is the consumption of beet juice, which contains iron, folate, and vitamin C. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of beetroot juice in increasing hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls with anemia.  Methods: This study used a literature review design by searching articles from the Google Scholar and PubMed databases. The search strategy was conducted using the keywords "beetroot effect," "blood hemoglobin," "beetroot benefit," and "anemia." The articles analyzed were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria relevant to the topic, resulting in 10 eligible journals. The data were analyzed descriptively by examining the study design, sample size, intervention, and results of hemoglobin level improvement.  Results: The review showed that all ten journals reported a significant increase in hemoglobin levels after regular consumption of beetroot juice in adolescent girls with anemia. The nutrients in beetroot play a role in red blood cell formation and increasing blood oxygen capacity.  Conclusion: Beet juice is effective in increasing hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls with anemia. Nutrition education programs for adolescents should recommend beet juice consumption as a natural alternative to increase hemoglobin levels.

Abstract

Background: Perineal rupture is a tear that occurs in the midline between the vulva and anus during childbirth. This condition is still commonly experienced by mothers giving birth vaginally, so preventive measures are needed, one of which is perineal massage. This study aims to determine the effect of perineal massage on the incidence of perineal rupture in mothers giving birth in the Prambanan District.  Methods: The study design used a quasi-experimental approach with a pretest–posttest control group design. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling, involving 30 respondents consisting of 15 intervention groups and 15 control groups. The research instrument used a perineal rupture observation sheet, and data analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney test at a significance level of 0.05.  Results: The results showed that the incidence of perineal rupture in the control group was 12 respondents (80%), while in the intervention group it was 6 respondents (40%). The statistical test yielded a p-value of 0.028, which means that perineal massage has a significant effect on reducing the incidence of perineal rupture in pregnant women in the Prambanan District.  Conclusion: Perineal massage is effective in reducing the risk of perineal rupture. The recommendation from this study is for midwives to provide education and training on perineal massage to pregnant women as part of their childbirth preparation care.
