Abstract

Background: Caries of permanent first molar teeth is a dental hard tissue disease that often occurs in elementary school children. The cause is if you ignore oral hygiene, one of which is the frequency of brushing your teeth and improper techniques so that it can lead to dental caries. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between the frequency of brushing teeth and permanent first molar caries of class grade V and VI elementary school students. Methods: The research method used is analytic with a Cross Sectional approach. The study population was all V and VI students in Nagari Tanjuang Barulak, Batipuh District, Tanah Datar Regency, totalling 143 people using saturated sampling technique and fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Data collection was carried out using permanent first molar caries examination. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis with statistical tests, namely chi-square.Results: The results showed that the frequency of brushing teeth 1x a day was 51.6%, 2x a day 48.4% and ≥2 a day 0%. Students with caries were 61.3% while those free of caries were 38.7%. The test results showed a p value = 0.03 <0.05, meaning that there was a significant relationship. Conclusion: The conclusion of the study is that there is a significant relationship between the frequency of tooth brushing and permanent first molar caries in elementary school students in Nagari Tanjuang Barulak. Maternal dental health history has no association with the incidence of stunting in children.

Abstract

Background: The reason why someone neglects dental and oral hygiene is a lack of knowledge. Knowledge is closely related to education. Dental and oral health education is a method to motivate individuals to clean their teeth and mouth effectively. Objectives: The aim of the research was to determine differences in toothbrushing knowledge through counseling using lecture methods and cartoon videos to students in grades IV and V at SDN 04 Air Pura, Pesisir Selatan Regency. Methods: The type of research used is a quasi-experimental type with a "pretest and posttest" design. The sampling technique used was a total population of 80 people. The way to collect data is by filling out a pretest and posttest questionnaire about good and correct tooth brushing. The data analysis used is univariate and bivariate analysis. Results: The results of the research showed that knowledge before being given counseling using the lecture method with good criteria was 32.5% then increased to 62.5%, while counseling using the method of playing cartoon videos with good criteria was 12.5% then increased to 55.0% after being given counseling using the method of playing cartoon videos. Conclusion: The conclusion of this research is that the lecture method and showing cartoon videos can both increase knowledge about good and correct tooth brushing. Keywords:Brushing teeth, Lecture Method, Cartoon Video

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health issues are influenced by various factors, one of which is plaque formation. Controlling plaque can be achieved through mechanical and chemical means, such as brushing with toothpaste that contains ingredients capable of inhibiting plaque growth. Objectives: This study aimed to examine differences in plaque index among students who brushed their teeth using herbal versus non-herbal toothpaste at the Dental Health Department, Padang Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health. Methods: Employing a quasi-experimental design with a post-test group approach, this research included 71 third-year students from the department. The study measured plaque indices after brushing with either herbal or non-herbal toothpaste. Data analysis involved univariate and bivariate methods, with the Independent T-Test used for bivariate analysis. Results: Findings revealed that the average plaque index was 0.3 in the herbal toothpaste group and 0.4 in the non-herbal group. Statistical testing showed a ρ value of 0.02 (0.02 < 0.05) and a mean difference in plaque index of -1.04.Conclusion: This indicates a significant difference between the two groups, with herbal toothpaste showing a more favorable effect on plaque reduction.
