Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of kapalo samek embroidery training in Nagari Simpuruik as an effort to promote economic empowerment and preserve local culture. Based on interviews with village officials and women participating in the training, it was found that most participants had already acquired embroidery skills through self-taught methods prior to the training. They were accustomed to working on embroidery either based on custom orders or in cooperation with "fabric bosses" who provided pre-designed cloth and threads. Embroidery has become a productive activity in Jorong Sijangek, mainly practiced by housewives. Although the training was conducted smoothly, the main challenge was gathering participants due to their limited availability. The market potential for kapalo samek embroidery is significant, especially during cultural or ceremonial events, but a major obstacle lies in marketing capabilities, particularly in digital platforms. Therefore, the training also served as a medium to introduce basic marketing strategies for craft products. In addition to enhancing economic capacity, the activity encourages cultural preservation by regenerating embroidery skills among the younger generation. This embroidery training highlights the importance of local initiatives in safeguarding cultural heritage and improving community welfare.

Abstract

Waste management is a serious challenge in many regions, including Nagari Sulit Air, which is experiencing an increase in waste volume due to population growth and economic activity. This study aims to explore innovations in waste management that are not only focused on environmental sustainability but also capable of empowering the local economy. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation studies of the waste management programs implemented in the nagari. The findings show that the community of Nagari Sulit Air has developed various innovative initiatives, such as waste banks, the processing of organic waste into compost, and creative recycling training for local residents, particularly women and youth. These innovations have proven effective in reducing waste volume and increasing environmental awareness among citizens. On the other hand, these activities also create new economic opportunities through the sale of recycled products and compost. This study highlights the importance of collaboration between the nagari government, the community, and third parties in establishing a sustainable and inclusive waste management system. The findings are expected to serve as a model for other regions in integrating environmental and economic aspects within community-based waste management practices.
