Abstract

The Qur'an, as the holy book of Muslims, not only contains spiritual and moral guidance but also touches on aspects of human life, including the values of time. Surah Al-'Ashr is a part of the Qur'an, which specifically discusses the value of time and provides profound teachings on the importance of respecting time in the course of human life. This research aims to examine the meaning of time contained in Surah Al-'Ashr through the interpretation approach of Ibn Katsir, a classical mufasir known as the tafsir bi al-ma'tsur approach, which is a method of interpretation based on other verses in the Qur'an, authentic hadiths, as well as the opinions of the companions and tabi'in. Through this approach, Ibn Katsir's interpretation shows that time is not just a chronological dimension, but a living capital that must be used responsibly. This research also relates the values in the surah to modern management practices, such as time management, work character building, and ethical leadership. The results of the study show that the messages of Surah Al-'Ashr have a strong relevance, not only in the religious context, but also in shaping a productive mindset in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of the word amal (أمل) in the Qur'an using the semantic approach of Toshihiko Izutsu. This approach emphasizes understanding the basic, relational, and historical meanings of a term in the linguistic and theological context of the Qur'an. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis of Qur'anic verses that contain the word amal. The results of the analysis show that the meaning of amal in the Qur'an includes two main poles: as an empty hope that is negligent (QS. Al-Hijr: 3) and as a positive, directed, and related hope to righteous deeds and awareness of the hereafter (QS. Al-Kahfi: 46). Paradigmatically speaking, amal has synonymous relationships with raja', ṭama', and tamanni, as well as antonyms with ya'isa and qanata. Historically, the meaning of amal has evolved from a worldly expectation in the pre-Qur'anic period to a religious and transcendental meaning in the Qur'anic and post-Qur'anic periods. In the context of the Qur’anic weltanschauung, amal reflects a view of life that emphasizes optimism, spiritual responsibility, and awareness of divine values. These findings confirm that the language in the Qur'an is not just a means of communication, but also a medium for the formation of a distinctive and dynamic worldview.

Abstract

This study examined the function of taqdīm-ta’khīr (foregrounding and postponement) in Qur’ānic discourse through a maqāṣidī analysis of Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 45 and 153. The study was grounded in the importance of linguistic structure as an integral component of Qur’anic objectives, particularly in shaping ritual and ethical orientations. It aimed to explain why ṣabr (patience) is consistently positioned before ṣalāh (prayer) and to identify the higher objectives reflected in this syntactic arrangement. This research employed a qualitative library-based method using textual analysis rooted in Qur’anic rhetoric (balāghah) and maqāṣidī tafsīr, with attention to syntactic structure, discursive context, and objective orientation. The findings demonstrated that the precedence of ṣabr over ṣalāh is not merely rhetorical emphasis but a deliberate Qur’anic strategy for structuring religious priorities. In Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 45, ṣabr functions as an inner discipline that enables meaningful prayer and supports the preservation of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn). In Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 153, ṣabr represents spiritual resilience during trials, oriented toward preserving human life and communal stability (ḥifẓ al-nafs). This study contributed to maqāṣidī Qur’anic studies by demonstrating that linguistic structure functions as an internal indicator of al-Qur’ān’s higher objectives.
