Abstract

This paper examines Elijah's spiritual struggles and emotional regulation using an interdisciplinary hermeneutic approach and literature review. Elijah struggled with fear due to the conflict with Jezebel and the Israelites about the spread of Baal worship (interpersonal struggles). The situation shook Elijah's spirituality and led to his disappointment with God (divine struggles). The pressure on his mind showed intrapersonal struggles, which culminated in a desire to die. Elijah's emotion regulation process can be seen since he chose to flee as a form of situation selection. To relieve emotional pressure, he modifies the situation by resting and sleeping (situation modification). Eating and drinking in response to the angel's gift reflects attentional deployment. Elijah's cognitive change occurred through God's intervention in the form of a divine encounter and reinforcement. This process reached its final stage in response modulation, where Elijah forgot his desire to die and chose to continue his prophetic duties.

Abstract

The relationship between religion and politics in biblical texts often reveals complex dynamics of power. One significant example can be found in King Josiah’s religious reform. This article examines King Josiah’s political strategy in 2 Kings 23:1–27 by applying Michel Foucault’s concept of politics of the body. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Josiah’s religious reforms were not merely efforts to purify the worship of Yahweh but also means to strengthen his political power and legitimacy. Using a qualitative descriptive method and a socio-historical hermeneutical approach, this research analyzes the textual and contextual aspects of Josiah’s reform. The findings show that Josiah’s physical actions, such as gathering the people, destroying idol worship sites, removing foreign priests, and restoring the Passover celebration, functioned as mechanisms of power to regulate both individual and social bodies of Judah. These actions reveal the interconnection between religion and politics in shaping national identity and authority. The study concludes that the politics of the body in Josiah’s reform provides a critical framework for understanding the relationship between power, religion, and social control in both ancient and contemporary contexts.
