Abstract

The documentary film Suster Apung tells the story of the struggle of a nurse serving in a remote area of Indonesia. This film highlights the dedication and sacrifice of medical personnel who face numerous challenges in delivering healthcare services to underserved communities. To effectively convey its message to the audience, a documentary must be supported by a well-constructed screenplay. A strong screenplay serves as a stimulus capable of eliciting immediate emotional responses from viewers. The quality of a documentary's screenplay can significantly enhance public empathy toward the individuals and communities portrayed. This study aims to examine the influence of the Suster Apung documentary’s screenplay on public empathy, using a sample of 130 randomly selected respondents. The research employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive-verificative method, analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings indicate that cinematography, sound design, and the selection of interview subjects contribute 30.2% to the development of empathy, while the remaining 69.8% is influenced by other variables not examined in this study. The results suggest that the quality of a documentary's screenplay is shaped by effective cinematography, appropriate sound design, and relevant sources. The better the screenplay quality, the higher the potential for fostering audience empathy

Abstract

Song as a medium of communication not only conveys messages in an aesthetic manner but is also rich in profound meanings that can be analyzed through a semiotic approach. This study aims to reveal the motivational meanings contained in the lyrics of Manusia Kuat by Tulus using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic framework. This approach examines signs through two main elements, namely the signifier and the signified, in order to uncover the relational meaning within the structure of the lyrics. The findings indicate that the song embodies strong motivational messages, such as perseverance, resilience, and confidence in human strength when facing life’s challenges. Lyrics such as “kita ini manusia kuat” and “kamu bukan debu yang diam” represent symbols of spirit and self-empowerment. In conclusion, through its linguistic symbols and connotative meanings, Manusia Kuat successfully articulates motivation that inspires listeners to become resilient and optimistic individuals.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul Pola Komunikasi Semiotika Lagu “Diskusi Senja” Karya Fourtwenty. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna yang terkandung dalam lagu tersebut. Teori yang digunakan dan relevan dalam penelitian ini adalah Teori Roland Barthes. Metode idalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Subyek penelitian ini adalah lirik lagu Diskusi Senja. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara mengapresiasi objek penelitian, membedah objek penelitian dan mengingat makna tanda-tanda pada lagu “Diskusi Senja” yang dianalogikan dengan kata-kata kiasan yang hanya dapat diterjemahkan dengan Teori Semiotika Roland Barthes. Melalui teori ini Barthes menjelaskan bahwa tanda tangan pertama adalah hubungan antara penanda (ekspresi) dan petanda (isi) dalam suatu tanda terhadap realitas eksternal. Barthes menyebut denotasi sebagai makna yang paling nyata dari suatu tanda. Konotasi adalah istilah yang digunakan untuk menggambarkan tahap kedua siklifikasi. Penelitian ini menemukan beberapa kesimpulan bahwa makna yang terkandung dalam lagu Diskusi Senja karya Fourtwenty mempunyai makna memberikan motivasi dalam hidup dari setiap umpannya. Dalam setiap feed lagunya menggunakan kata-kata perumpamaan yang dapat dianalisis secara semiotika. Selain itu, penelitian ini mampu memberikan makna perumpamaan yang digambarkan melalui teori analisis semiotika Roland Barthes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the construction of melancholic character meaning is represented in the film Gundala directed by Joko Anwar through the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce. The focus of this research is directed toward identifying visual and verbal signs that represent the melancholic characteristics of the main character, as well as interpreting the meanings embedded within those signs. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method using Peirce’s semiotic analysis framework, which consists of three categories: icon, index, and symbol. The data were collected through film observation and in-depth interviews with the director. The findings reveal that the character is constructed as a melancholic figure characterized by doubt, reflectiveness, and emotional depth. This representation is developed through visual signs, such as gloomy facial expressions, dim lighting, and cool color tones, as well as verbal signs in the form of dialogues that reflect inner conflict and hesitation. Therefore, the film can be interpreted as a reflection of human psychological conditions in the midst of social and moral pressures.
