Abstract

Qur'anic exegesis is often enriched with Isra'aliyyat narrations to supplement its concise narratives. Imam al-?abari, in his magnum opus Jami? al-Bayan, includes many such reports, one of which concerns the trial of Prophet Solomon (Sulayman) in Surah ?ad, verse 34. This research transcends the traditional criticism of these Isra'iliyyat. Employing a critical hermeneutic framework that combines a 'hermeneutics of suspicion' with a 'hermeneutics of retrieval,' this article posits that al-Tabari's inclusion of problematic narrations was not a methodological weakness but a conscious intellectual act. Al-Tabari deliberately bequeathed a hermeneutic tension between the preservation of the transmission-based tradition (naql) and the safeguarding of theological integrity ('aql). Through a comparative analysis with later exegetes (such as Ibn Kathir and al-Razi) and an interdisciplinary analysis of literary motifs, this study demonstrates that the case of Surah Sad: 34 serves as a microcosm reflecting the complex dynamics in the formation of authority and discourse in classical Islamic exegesis (tafsir). Consequently, al-Tabari is viewed not merely as a collector, but as a brilliant archivist who mapped the entire spectrum of thought of his time, leaving it to be interrogated by subsequent generations.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the emergence of damir and analyzes its distribution across 114 surahs of the Qur'an to address key questions regarding the relationship between the use of damir, the adaptation of damir to the phenomenon of taghlib, and the discourse on gender equality. It employs a mixed-methods approach based on full corpus analysis, combined with the spirit of maqasid al-shari'ah, and engages perspectives from both classical and contemporary Islamic thinkers, as well as hermeneutics scholars concerned with this issue. The findings show that the form and occurrence of damir do not indicate the superiority of any gender; rather, they must be understood according to the linguistic rule of taghlib. The study concludes that the distribution of damir in the Qur'an represents a divine communication strategy that avoids gender bias in Qur'anic language, a conclusion that can be demonstrated through scientific analysis.

Abstract

The debate over hermeneutics in Quranic studies remains a central discourse among contemporary Muslim academics. Hermeneutics is considered capable of bridging the revealed text with modern social realities, but at the same time has the potential to give rise to relativism of meaning and shift the authority of revelation. This study aims to weigh the potential and risks of hermeneutics in the study of interpretation and to offer a middle ground formulation called bounded hermeneutics . This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach, examining the main works of Abdullah Saeed, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, Amina Wadud, as well as the thoughts of Indonesian scholars such as Sahiron Syamsuddin, Quraish Shihab, and Abdurrahman Wahid. The analysis results show that hermeneutics contributes to presenting interpretations that are contextual and responsive to contemporary issues such as gender, human rights, and pluralism. However, this approach also has epistemological and social weaknesses when applied without limits. Through a synthesis between the principles of maqāṣid al- sharī'ah , the discipline of ushul al-tafsir , and the contextual sensitivity of hermeneutics, this research offers awake hermeneutics as a model of moderate interpretation that is relevant to the dynamics of the times but still maintains the sanctity of the divine text.
