Abstract

In the digital era, fostering student autonomy is crucial, particularly in traditional Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) that still rely on teacher-centered methods. This study explores the application of heutagogy in enhancing student independence at Riyadul Muta’amilin Pesantren, Cidahu, Sukabumi. Using a qualitative case study, data were gathered from 60 santri and several teachers through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Results show that heutagogy—via blended learning and digital tools encouraged students to learn independently. Learners showed greater enthusiasm, critical thinking, and reduced reliance on teachers. Teachers, in turn, used more flexible teaching strategies. The use of smartphones and educational software played a key role in promoting self-directed learning. This approach successfully bridges traditional and modern educational models in pesantren, fostering lifelong learning. Despite its promise, the study's findings are limited by its focus on one site and qualitative design. Further studies could broaden the scope or include quantitative methods for validation.

Abstract

Student discipline is a critical component in Aqidah Akhlak instruction within Islamic schools, yet effective strategies to foster it remain underexplored. This study aims to examine the impact of implementing rewards and punishments on student discipline in the Aqidah Akhlak subject at MTs An-Najwa Parungkuda, Sukabumi. Employing a quantitative approach with an experimental design, the study involved total sampling of 42 students from grades VIII and IX. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test due to non-normal data distribution. Findings revealed a very weak relationship between reward and punishment and student discipline, with a correlation coefficient of 0.224 and an effect contribution of only 0.04%. These results suggest that extrinsic behavioral interventions alone are insufficient to foster meaningful disciplinary improvements in religious educational settings, which emphasize affective and spiritual development. The study highlights the need for discipline strategies grounded in Islamic values and relational approaches between teachers and students. Limitations include the small sample size, single research location, and short duration of intervention. Future studies are encouraged to employ mixed-method or longitudinal designs to provide deeper insights into the complexities of student discipline within the Islamic education context.

Abstract

The ability to speak Arabic (maharah al-kalam) is essential for students in Islamic boarding schools, especially in learning the Qur'an and other Arabic texts. However, many students struggle with reading the Qur'an fluently and understanding Arabic structure. This indicates the need for an effective and integrated learning method. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the tartil method in improving the Arabic speaking skills of students at Pondok Pesantren Al-Fatah Sukabumi. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving 15 participants. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, and oral tests. The results show that the tartil method, when applied systematically, positively impacted the students' pronunciation, fluency, and understanding of Arabic in the Qur'anic context. Group practice and direct interaction with the Qur'an enhanced students' confidence and ability to speak Arabic in religious settings. The findings suggest that the tartil method can be an effective tool in Arabic language learning at pesantren, integrating tajwid knowledge and language skills. The study also highlights the importance of independent practice time in improving Arabic proficiency.
