Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted various aspects of life. Beyond the health sector, the pandemic has also caused significant economic downturns. This study aims to examine the struggles of poor families during the pandemic as represented in the film “Happy Girls Don’t Cry”. This research employs a qualitative method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This approach is used to interpret the hidden meanings behind signs. It was found three scenes that represent the struggles of poor families. First, loan sharks as a practical solution in facing economic difficulties. Second, the commodification of poverty on social media. Third, selling valuable items to survive. The film represented the struggles of the lower-class society to survive during the pandemic.

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini merupakan sebuah kajian mengenai pemikiran Fredric Jameson, seorang tokoh Neo-Marxis asal Amerika. Jameson awalnya dikenal sebagai kritikus sastra hingga akhirnya menulis sebuah artikel yang berkembang menjadi sebuah buku mengenai kritik terhadap posmodern yang berjudul Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism. Buku ini kemudian mengantarkan Jameson sebagai seorang kritikus Posmodernisme. Jameson melihat bahwa perkembangan produk budaya pada masa Posmodern tidak lebih dari perubahan modus operasi kapitalisme untuk tetap bisa melakukan akumulasi modal. Produksi budaya dan industri massa yang dirayakan masyarakat kemudian mengarah pada aktifitas ekonomi, sebuah bentuk masyarakat konsumsi gaya baru. Beberapa kata kunci dari Jameson seperti pastiche, superfisialitas, dan schizophrenia merupakan kritik terhadap budaya Posmodern yang menurutnya adalah bentuk baru dari kapitalisme lanjut. Kata kunci: posmodern, kapitalisme lanjut, pastiche, superfisialitas, schizophrenia Abstract This article was a study of the thoughts of a Neo-Marxist theoretician from America, Fredric Jameson. He was initially known as a literary critic until eventually writing an article which developed into a book on criticism of postmodernism entitled Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism. It was book led Jameson as a postmodernism critic. Jameson argued that the development of cultural products in the postmodern period was nothing more than a change in the mode of operation of capitalism as a continuity of capital accumulation. The mass industry and culture production celebrated by the people then leads to economic activity, a new form of consumption society. Some of Jameson's keywords such as pastiche, superficiality, and schizophrenia are criticisms of Postmodern which was a new transformation of late capitalism.
