Abstract

This study discussed about the maxim violation of Raja Parhata in Martonggo Raja Batak Toba ceremony. The aims of this study were to analyze the kinds of maxim of violation of Raja Parhata and reasons of maxim of violation occurred in Martonggo Raja Batak Toba Ceremony. This study conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research was from the utterances of Raja Parhata. The source data were from two Martonggo Raja videos and two informants of Raja Parhata. The writer found violation of maxim of quantity with total number 28 utterances (46.6%), violation of maxim of quality with total number 3 utterances (5%), violation of maxim of relation with total number 21 utterances (35%) and violation of maxim of manner with total number 8 utterances (13.4%). There were four reasons of the Raja Parhata did violation of maxims in Martonggo Raja Batak Toba ceremony, namely to show respect (43 utterances, 71,6%) is the most reason. Besides, the Raja Parhata also change the topic (15 utterances, 25%), and the fewest reason is to keep a secret (2 utterances, 3,4%).

Abstract

The study dealed with the types of associative meaning in Toba Batak Song. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of associative meaning in Batak Toba song and to find out the meaning of associative in traditional song Batak Toba. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from traditional songs of Batak Toba which were about messages or advices from parents for the children. There were 8 traditional songs of Batak Toba. The study revealed 82 lyrics related to associative meaning. Those 82 lyrics consisted of 28 lyrics in colloctive meaning, 21 lyrics in affective meaning, 12 lyrics in social meaning, 6 lyrics in reflective meaning and 15 lyrics in collocative meaning.The most dominant type of associative meaning used in Batak Toba song was connotative meaning. The associative meaning expressed in traditional Batak Toba songs connotative meaning expressed to receive compliment, old, helpless, children for being aware where they came from, and remember all of the advices. Affective meaning expressed about feeling between parents and children. Reflective meaning expressedto lyrics which have multiple meaning in environment for instance death. Social meaning expressed to class social that happen inside in the lyric. And the last was connotative meaning which expressedthe rightness, and behavior.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out the types of the taboo words expressed by characters in End of Watch Movie by identifying it and to explain the motives for taboo words expressed by the characters in the End of Watch Movie. This research utilized a theory from Jay (1992). This research utilized a design of a descriptive method which is a method for research that endeavors to depict and interpret the articles as per reality. The data of this research are in the linguistic features found in the movie. The data are quantities of English taboo words that contain transcripts in the movie. The data in this research were collected by using documentary techniques. In order to collect data, recorder technique is used as the instrument to collect the data. The technique of analyzing data will be examined by utilizing descriptive qualitative methods. The results of the research show that there are 113 data and for the taboo words type of scatology is the frequently used by the characters with the rate 23,89% and the most motive used is anger and frustration with the rate 30,09%.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out 1) the types of category shifts that occur in the English-Indonesian subtitled Green Book film, and 2) the reasons for the translation shift in the English-Indonesian subtitled Green Book film. The data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative. The source of data in this research from subtitle english-indonesian subtitle of green book movie. The instrument for collecting data in this research is a documentary technique. the instrument of collecting data are used recorder and analyzed based on theory by Catford (1965). The results of the study show that 1) There are 303 data category shifts in the English-Indonesian subtitled Green Book film according to the results of the study. In total, there are four types of shifts: structure shift (24.8%), class shift (5.9%), unit shift (45.5%), and intra-system shift (which makes up the rest) (23.8%). The reason why the translation shift occurs in the green book movie subtitle is because of the textual equivalent. In translation shift, the shift occurs at the grammatical and lexical levels. Textual equivalent is a translation utterance between the source language and the target language. Some translations have no formal correspondence between the two language code systems. Shift the translation to achieve a good equivalence so that it can produce good and natural translation quality.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out meanings, what, how, and why he author conveys moral values through the lyrics of the song Mandailing by Top Simamora based on social life. This study was conducted using an descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study were taken from Mandailing song lyrics by Top Simamora Feat Deliana Lubis. The sources of the data were ;˜Nantulang Manyuru Sirang™, ˜Pasikolahon™, ˜Gagal Maroban Boru™, ˜Boru Na Beteng™, ˜Caleg Na Tuppur™, ˜Titik Sapartambuan™, ˜Biaso Pe™, ˜Nasibku Marboru™, ˜Gut-gut Rap Sombong™, ˜Rumah sakit Panyosalan™. The data were analyzed by using Kinnear™s theory. The writer found there were four types of moral values namely,  commitment to something greater than oneself (26.2%), self-respect but with humbleness or respect to others, self-discipline, and acceptance of personal responsibility (33.3%), respect and caring for others (14.3%) and faith (26.2%). 2) Moral values were realized verbally. 3) There were some reasons author conveys moral values through Mandailing song lyrics by Top Simamora feat Deliana Lubis such as inspired by the realities of the life problems of Mandailing™s society, as a medium to convey advice without satirize the others, to make people or society aware , and to motivate the listeners do kindness.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out 1) the hero™s journey stages in Anthony Horowitz™s novel Alex Rider (Stormbreaker) 2) Character archetypes and their roles in helping or hindering the hero to complete the hero™s journey stages in Alex Rider (Strombreaker). The research is conducted using qualitative research methods, the technique of data analysis is descriptive qualitative method, the instrument for collecting the data is documentary sheet. The source of data used for this research is Alex Rider (Stormbreaker) novel. The results of this study showed that the seventeen (17) stages formulated by Joseph Campbell are found in the novel. Furthermore, this study also showed that the seven (7) different archetypes formulated by Christopher Vogler are found in the novel. This concludes that the hero™s journey stages and the character archetypes formulas that the first data collected by Joseph Campbell was from oral tradition stories is found to be applicable to modern novels.
