Abstract

Household food security among pineapple farmers is one of the critical issues in the development of the agribusiness sector, particularly in East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan. Although pineapples are one of the region's leading commodities with a production of 336.4 tons in 2022, their contribution to improving farmer welfare remains suboptimal. This study aims to examine the existing condition of household food security among farmers, the role of gender, and the empowerment of farmers' wives in East Kotawaringin Regency. The research was conducted in five districts with the highest pineapple production using the purposive sampling method, with 296 respondents determined using the Yamane Formula. Data analysis was carried out descriptively to identify socio-economic characteristics, levels of food security, gender inclusion, and the empowerment of farmers' wives. The results show that 71.62% of pineapple farmer households fall under the food-secure category, while 23.99% are slightly food insecure, and 4.39% are moderately food insecure. The leadership dimension contributes the most to the empowerment of farmers' wives (30.97%), followed by dimensions of production, income, resources, and time. The main challenges include low education levels, limited access to agricultural extension services, and gender-based barriers. This study emphasizes the importance of inclusive policies for women's empowerment in pineapple agribusiness to enhance food security and the sustainable welfare of farmer households.

Abstract

Empowering women in the context of agricultural sustainability is an important and relevant issue. However, there are challenges and obstacles that need to be addressed in efforts to empower women farmers. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the roles, challenges, and potentials of coconut farmer's wives in women's empowerment is necessary. The aim of this research is to evaluate the roles of coconut farmer's wives based on their potentials and the challenges they face, with the goal of supporting the sustainability of coconut farming. A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) framework combined with an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework is used to analyze the perceptions of experts regarding the roles of coconut farmer's wives in the research location. The research findings indicate that the most prominent threat to the role of women farmers is the frequent changes in agricultural policies that can affect prices and the lack of training programs for women coconut farmers. Meanwhile, the prominent weaknesses affecting the role of women coconut farmers in the research location are the frequent limitations in accessing productive resources such as capital, land, technology, and training. The results obtained from this research can provide knowledge and understanding to various stakeholders regarding the most crucial issues to consider in formulating policies to enhance the role of women farmers

Abstract

Promoting the development of kepok banana plantations is an effort to strengthen domestic food security and significantly contribute to the economy. The main objective of this research is to offer several strategies for developing kepok banana plantations in Seruyan Regency. This research is based on various empirical analyses, including questionnaires and interviews with kepok banana farmers in three central villages of kepok banana plantations in Seruyan Regency, namely Sungai Bakau Village, Pematang Panjang Village, and Bangun Harja Village. To achieve these objectives, a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) approach was used, and based on the results, a quantitative strategic planning matrix (QSPM) approach was employed to manage the kepok banana plantations effectively. The research findings indicate weaknesses such as using simple technology by farmers, limited farmer group activities, lack of capital, limited knowledge of the market system, and weak farmer institutions. On the other hand, there are also several opportunities such as the development of information and communication technology, relatively secure farming activities with low crime rates, policies on food diversification, high demand for bananas, sufficient available land, and available labor force. Therefore, the current development strategy emphasizes the need to strengthen farmer organizations, optimize existing farmland to increase production, and seek government assistance as a high-priority alternative strategy for the location's kepok banana plantations.

Abstract

Household-scale banana processing enterprises managed by women in Seruyan Regency hold strategic potential to increase income and empower rural women economically. This study aims to: (1) analyze income from kepok banana processing businesses, (2) measure the value added generated from processing activities, and (3) explore forms of women's empowerment within the traditional food value chain. A mixed-methods approach was employed. Quantitative data were analyzed using income formulas and the Hayami method, while qualitative data were thematically analyzed through in-depth interviews with 15 female business owners. The results show an average net income of IDR 142,351 per production cycle, with a value-added ratio of 90.83% of the output value. Women played a central role in production and business decision-making. Beyond economic contribution, this activity enhances women's control over productive assets and fosters self-confidence and social participation. These findings suggest that banana processing is a multidimensional empowerment strategy that supports local food security and rural resilience.

Abstract

Female vegetable traders work to supplement household income. Despite their husbands being employed, their independence drives them to contribute financially. The average income of the husbands, around Rp 4,000,000, is insufficient to support a family of four. Consequently, many women engage in informal work, such as trading, to earn additional income for their families. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of female vegetable traders and their role and contribution to the family income. The research is conducted in Subuh Market, Alkamal Market, and Keramat Market, Kotawaringin Timur Regency, Central Kalimantan Province, selected purposively. The study involves 50 married female vegetable traders, with samples taken using purposive sampling. Primary data is collected through interviews, while secondary data is gathered from BPS, journals, and other relevant sources. Results show that the majority of the female traders are aged 31-40 years (46%), have a primary school education (42%), and have more than four years of trading experience (56%). Most have four dependents (46%). The role and contribution of these female traders to household income is 43.8%, with an average income of Rp 3,395,000 per month. It can be concluded that the contribution of female vegetable traders to family income is relatively small, as it is less than 50%.

Abstract

One of the critical issues that are still being hotly discussed is farmers' welfare, especially smallholders. The agricultural sector's contribution to the economy is not directly proportional to most farmers' welfare levels, especially in Indonesia. This research is intended to answer the question of the determinant factors that determine the level of welfare of coconut farmers. Purposive Sampling was used to determine Pematang Village, Seruyan Hilir District, Seruyan Regency, as the research location with 60 respondents determined by the Snowball sampling method. The level of welfare of farmer households was analyzed by descriptive analysis, while the determinants of smallholders' welfare were analyzed using ordered logistic regression. The results showed that the determinant factors that affect the welfare of small coconut farmers are land size, ownership of transportation and the amount of production. The results of this study suggest that to improve the welfare of small coconut farmers, a policy related to increasing coconut productivity and easy access to transportation advice is needed.

Abstract

The issue of gender equality remains a serious concern in several developing countries, including Indonesia. On the other hand, women, particularly farmer wives, are recognized to have the potential to enhance the welfare of farming families. Therefore, effective solutions need to be formulated to address the issue of the involvement of farmer wives in agriculture, considering the comprehensive factors causing their engagement from various aspects. The main objectives of this research are: 1) To analyze the involvement of farmer wives in pineapple farming. 2) To analyze the determining factors of the involvement of farmer wives in pineapple farming. Purposive sampling was chosen to select the Baamang Hulu Village, Tanah Mas Village, and Tinduk Village in the Baamang Sub-district of East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan, as the research locations, with 200 respondents determined using the Snowball sampling method. Sociodemographic characteristics and the level of involvement of farmer wives were analyzed using descriptive analysis, while the determining factors of farmer wives' involvement were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression. The research results indicate that most farmer wives are categorized as having a high level of involvement, with the determining factors influencing their engagement being experience, education, and participation in agricultural associations. This research recommends that to enhance the involvement of farmer wives in agricultural activities, it is necessary to ensure that they have fair and equal access to the resources required to participate in agriculture actively. This includes access to land, water, agricultural technology, financing, and markets. It is also essential to encourage the development of more agricultural associations that accommodate the participation of farmer wives.
