Abstract

Abstrac: This study examines the influence of social media on the language development of adolescents. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis involving adolescent social media users. The results indicate that social media has a significant impact on adolescent language, including vocabulary enrichment, the emergence of new slang, and the tendency to use informal language in daily communication. However, excessive use of non-standard language can reduce proficiency in formal Indonesian and lead to misunderstandings. The findings highlight the need for guidance in the use of language on social media to maintain the quality and identity of the Indonesian language among adolescents.

Abstract

Efforts to improve language literacy through education policies are a strategic step in strengthening the role of the Indonesian language as a symbol of national identity and as the main medium for learning. This article examines the implementation of language policies in the world of education, covering various approaches, challenges faced, and the impacts of their implementation. Various efforts have been made, such as the development of a linguistic competency-based curriculum, training for educators, providing relevant teaching materials, and increasing synergy between related institutions in supporting the success of the policy. However, the implementation of this policy still faces a number of obstacles, including differences in language proficiency levels among students, limited teaching staff, and the lack of adequate learning facilities and media. To ensure the effectiveness of this policy, ongoing evaluation and comprehensive integration between language policies and education policies are needed in order to provide optimal impacts on literacy development. Thus, Indonesian language literacy not only functions as a means of communication, but also becomes the main foundation in achieving inclusive and sustainable national education goals.

Abstract

Abstrak: From a sociolinguistic standpoint, this study investigates language use in the Mobile Legend virtual game community. The study analyzes how language serves as a medium for social cohesiveness, identity formation, and norm establishment in digital environments using a virtual ethnography technique. Participant observation and content analysis of interactions within Mobile Legend community platforms were used to gather data. The results show a number of unique patterns of language use, such as game-related specialized registers, linguistic variances impacted by players' sociocultural backgrounds, and language functions that promote unity and govern social standards. The study shows that language has a vital role in forming community identity and preserving social harmony in virtual gaming communities, in addition to being a medium for communication. In the quickly changing digital age, this study advances our knowledge of language dynamics in virtual communities and applies sociolinguistic theories to virtual settings.

Abstract

Abstract: The development of digital technology has significantly influenced the way we learn, including in the realm of language learning. This transformation requires the integration of digital literacy skills and language proficiency. This study was conducted to explore the role of technology in language learning in the digital age, to evaluate how effectively technology enhances the quality of learning, and to provide strategic recommendations for the sustainable use of technology in language education. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review. Data were collected from various relevant academic sources. The findings reveal that the use of technology, such as e-learning applications, social media, and digital communication platforms, can improve learning productivity, enhance the effectiveness of the learning process, and broaden access to learning resources. However, without proper regulation, the use of technology may also lead to issues such as decreased concentration and student dependency. Therefore, it is essential to develop well-planned strategies for technology use that focus on character development. In conclusion, technology plays a significant role in enhancing the quality of language learning, as long as it is used wisely and purposefully

Abstract

Abstrac: This meta-analysis examines the use of YouTube as a language learning medium based on 15 research articles published between 2020-2024. This study aims to analyze patterns, trends, and implications of YouTube utilization in language education through document analysis of selected articles. The results show that YouTube is increasingly used in language education across different educational levels (40% in high schools, 20% each in early childhood education and higher education), with English (46.67%) and Indonesian (40%) as the most studied languages. Most research employed qualitative methods (46.67%), followed by quantitative (33.33%) and mixed methods (20%). The primary findings indicate that YouTube enhances learning effectiveness (40%), increases interest and motivation (26.67%), provides accessibility and learning flexibility (20%), enriches learning materials (20%), facilitates language acquisition in children (20%), and improves specific language skills (13.33%). The research identified several challenges including internet connectivity issues (40%), content curation needs (26.67%), limited interaction (20%), distractions (20%), and digital literacy requirements (20%). Despite these challenges, YouTube demonstrates significant positive impacts on vocabulary mastery (26.67%), concept understanding (33.33%), and learning motivation (40%). This meta-analysis provides comprehensive insights for educators and researchers regarding YouTube's effectiveness as a language learning medium.

Abstract

Abstrack: This study aims to identify and analyze the use of deixis in the comments on TikTok videos uploaded by content creator Erika Richardo. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and a pragmatic approach, this research categorizes comment data into five types of deixis: personal, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social. The results indicate that netizens use various types of deixis to construct interactions, convey information, express emotions, and build social relationships in the digital context. The use of personal deixis helps users identify themselves and others, spatial and temporal deixis provide situational context, discourse deixis refers to elements within the conversation, and social deixis reflects norms and social relationships among users. This research provides insights into how language is dynamically used in social media to create meaning and strengthen interactions between users.

Abstract

This study examines the art of language in the emoji era as a modern communication adaptation from a psycholinguistic perspective. The research focuses on the semantic shift phenomenon in emoji usage among university students, particularly analyzing the crying emoji (????) which is now interpreted as laughing, and the sweet smile emoji (????) which now connotes negative emotions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with data collected through interviews, observations, and online discourse analysis from 10 university students aged 18-24, this research reveals significant findings in language adaptation. Results show that 87% of respondents interpret the crying emoji as an expression of laughter rather than sadness, while 73% perceive the sweet smile emoji as passive-aggressive or concealing negative emotions. This semantic inversion represents a psycholinguistic phenomenon where the visual representation of emotions is reinterpreted through collective digital socialization processes. The findings contribute to understanding modern communication adaptations and have implications for intergenerational communication, digital literacy curriculum development, and psycholinguistic theory on non-verbal digital communication.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze and describe the role of students in using TikTok as an educational platform. The method applied in data collection and analysis is a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects in this research were 3 TikTok creators, namely Rian Fahardhi, Husain Basyaiban, and Erika Richardo. The data used are videos uploaded by the three TikTok creators. Based on the research results, it can be seen that the existence of students in the digital era has an impact on learning among the general public. It is hoped that this research can provide deeper insight into the role of students in the digital era, so that it can improve the quality of learning and active participation among the general public.

Abstract

Abstrac: This study aims to examine the impact of the use of digital technology on the quality of interaction between teachers and students in the learning process. The scope of the study includes the positive and negative aspects of the integration of digital technology in education, especially in the context of online learning and the use of digital media in the school environment. The method used in this study is a literature review with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through searching for relevant scientific journal articles published in the last three to four years. The results of the study indicate that digital technology contributes positively to increasing the effectiveness of learning, facilitating broad access to information, enabling personalization of teaching materials, and strengthening collaboration between teachers, students, and parents. However, on the other hand, excessive use of technology can reduce the intensity of face-to-face communication, reduce emotional closeness between teachers and students, and increase the risk of distraction and student dependence on digital devices. In addition, the inequality of digital literacy and teacher competence in utilizing technology is also a significant obstacle. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of a balance between the use of technology and interpersonal interaction in the learning process. An adaptive pedagogical strategy is needed so that technology can be used optimally without sacrificing the humanistic aspects of education.

Abstract

Multilingualism is becoming increasingly prominent among Generation Z, who are growing up amid globalization and digital technological advancement. While many studies have separately examined language shift or language maintenance, few have specifically explored the relationship between multilingual practices among Generation Z and the preservation of regional languages, particularly in linguistically diverse areas such as South Sulawesi. This study aims to describe the patterns of first, second, and third language use among Generation Z and explore their connection to language maintenance efforts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interviews with 60 respondents aged 18–20 from various regions in South Sulawesi. The findings reveal that 63.3% of respondents use Indonesian as their first language, followed by Bugis (18.3%), Makassarese (15%), and others. For the second language, respondents tend to use regional languages, while English dominates as the third language (65%). These results indicate a shift in regional languages from the position of mother tongue to second or third language. However, there is still evidence of preservation efforts through the use of regional languages within family and social settings. These findings provide a foundation for the formulation of linguistic and educational policies that promote regional language revitalization, and they enrich theoretical understanding of multilingual dynamics in the digital era. ABSTRAK Multilingualisme merupakan fenomena yang semakin menonjol di kalangan Generasi Z yang hidup di tengah arus globalisasi dan kemajuan teknologi digital. Meskipun banyak penelitian membahas pergeseran bahasa atau pemertahanan bahasa secara terpisah, masih sedikit yang mengkaji hubungan antara praktik multilingualisme Generasi Z dan pelestarian bahasa daerah, khususnya di wilayah dengan keragaman bahasa seperti Sulawesi Selatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan pola penggunaan bahasa pertama, kedua, dan ketiga di kalangan Generasi Z serta mengeksplorasi keterkaitannya dengan upaya pemertahanan bahasa daerah. Menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif, data diperoleh melalui observasi, angket, dan wawancara terhadap 60 responden usia 18–20 tahun dari berbagai daerah di Sulawesi Selatan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 63,3% responden menggunakan bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa pertama, disusul Bugis (18,3%), Makassar (15%), dan lainnya. Sebagai bahasa kedua, responden cenderung menggunakan bahasa daerah, sementara bahasa Inggris dominan sebagai bahasa ketiga (65%). Temuan ini menunjukkan adanya pergeseran bahasa daerah dari posisi bahasa ibu menjadi bahasa kedua atau ketiga. Namun, tetap terdapat indikasi upaya pelestarian melalui penggunaan bahasa daerah dalam lingkungan keluarga dan sosial. Temuan ini memberikan dasar bagi perumusan kebijakan linguistik dan pendidikan yang mendorong revitalisasi bahasa daerah, serta memperkaya pemahaman teoretis tentang dinamika multilingualisme di era digital.
