Abstract

The design of inpatient rooms plays a crucial role in enhancing patient comfort and supporting the healing process. Although Indonesia's healthcare regulations have promoted standardized inpatient care through the National Health Insurance (JKN) scheme, the implementation of design elements that consider patients’ psychological and physiological needs remains suboptimal. This study aims to examine the influence of inpatient room design on patient experience and recovery outcomes by applying the Evidence-Based Design (EBD) framework and Ulrich’s Supportive Design Theory, which emphasizes three core aspects: perceived control, social support, and positive distraction. The research was conducted at Santa Maria Hospital in Pekanbaru using a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from Likert-scale surveys and qualitative data from interviews analyzed thematically. Findings reveal that physical elements of the inpatient room—such as natural lighting, environmental control, and indoor air quality—significantly affect patient satisfaction and healing outcomes. Moreover, noticeable differences were identified among class III patients based on room orientation and access to daylight. This study contributes to the development of more adaptive and human-centered healthcare design and supports the implementation of national policies on standardized inpatient services.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of public visual perception on urban navigation and city image through the role of landmarks in Pekanbaru. The background stems from the declining visual legibility of the city due to rapid spatial development and architectural homogenization. Five main landmarks were examined: An-Nur Grand Mosque, Zapin Monument, Soeman HS Library, the Riau Governor’s Office, and Idrus Tintin Art Pavilion. A mixed-method approach was applied using questionnaires from 105 respondents, field observations, and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis. The results indicate that An-Nur Grand Mosque and Soeman HS Library function as the city’s visual-affective anchors with high legibility and civic pride. Zapin Monument serves as a directional marker with strong cultural symbolism, while the Governor’s Office is visually dominant but weak in collective identity. Idrus Tintin Art Pavilion represents cultural symbolism but plays a limited navigational role. The study concludes that Pekanbaru’s city image emerges from the interaction of architectural quality, navigational function, and symbolic-emotional values, recommending enhanced visibility, integrated wayfinding systems, and cultural revitalization in urban planning.

Abstract

Landmarks play a vital role in shaping the city’s image as orientation markers and visual identity elements. Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau Province, has experienced rapid development that produced many iconic buildings, yet systematic studies based on public perception remain limited. This research aims to identify the main landmarks of Pekanbaru City and analyze the visual characteristics influencing their legibility. A mixed-method approach was applied through field observation, visual documentation, and a questionnaire survey involving 150 purposively selected respondents. Descriptive and statistical analyses using SmartPLS were conducted to examine relationships among visual perception variables (singularity, location, uniqueness, memorable) and landmark recognition. The findings reveal that An-Nur Grand Mosque, Soeman HS Library, and the Riau Governor’s Office are the most recognized landmarks. Location and memorable factors have significant positive effects, while uniqueness shows a negative influence. The study emphasizes that enhancing landmark design and spatial arrangement strengthens urban navigation and visual identity in Pekanbaru.
