Abstract

Dental health problems are still a challenge in society, including children with mental retardation who have limitations in intellectual, social, behavioral, and motor coordination aspects. This condition impacts low oral hygiene, where around 75% of children are classified as poor. This situation occurs due to the limited ability of children to carry out tooth brushing activities independently and the lack of dental health programs specifically designed for mentally retarded children. Therefore, behavior change therapy can be an alternative strategy to change tooth brushing behavior by meeting the special needs of children with intellectual disabilities through tooth brushing skills taught by teachers at school. The goal is to provide an alternative to changing children's tooth brushing behavior. The method used is Quasi-Experimental Control Group Pretest and Posttest Design. Results The behavior change therapy model as an alternative approach to changing the behavior of children with special disabilities of mentally retarded children has an average expert validation score of 86.67 (very feasible). Teacher skills effectively improve the tooth brushing behavior of children with intellectual disabilities through a behavior change treatment model approach, with a p-value of 0.040 (p <0.05) meaning that the behavior change therapy treatment model for brushing teeth of mentally retarded children is effective in improving the tooth brushing behavior of mentally retarded children through teacher skills.

Abstract

Oral health problems in children are still a significant problem in Indonesia. Based on Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) data in 2018, it shows that the percentage of cavities is 88.8% while only 2.8% of children apply the right way to brush their teeth. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) also showed a dental caries rate of 43.6% in Semarang City. One of the efforts made to reduce caries rates through a promotive and preventive approach by utilizing media as a means of increasing dental health knowledge is ROPITA (Round Spin Table) media. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of ROPITA (Round Spin Table) media on increasing dental health knowledge of elementary school students. The research method used is true experimental design which includes pre-test and post-test with control group design. This study involved two different groups of subjects, namely the intervention group and the control group which were randomly selected. The results of this study showed that the p-value was 0.000 (p < 0.05), meaning that there was an effectiveness of ROPITA (Round Spin Table) media on increasing the knowledge of elementary school students and the Cohen's D value of 0.86, which showed a large effect of the intervention group.   Keywords : Media; ROPITA (Round Spin Table); elementary school students; knowledge

Abstract

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that causes demineralization of the tough tissues of the teeth. One of the factors that contribute to tooth decay is poor behavior. 80% of the students in SD Yapita Surabaya School suffer from dental caries, with an average caries index reaching the "poor" level of 2.2. This problem can be addressed by modifying the turntable teaching model, which can achieve fun and educational learning, thus making the learning process interesting. The aim of this research is to develop a practical and effective modified version of the Turntable teaching model to improve the dental health of students in SD Yapita Surabaya. The research method used is Research and Development with a true experiment research design (pretest-posttest). The sample consisted of 60 respondents including before treatment group and the after treatment group. The data from the model test results used paired t-test. Results: The modified Turntable teaching model was tested by experts for validation, and the inter-class correlation coefficient P value was 0.001. Modification of the Turntable Education Model is feasible and its implementation is effective as an effort to improve actions in maintaining dental health in students at SD Yapita Surabaya in the group after treatment compared to the group before treatment. Abstract

Dental caries is a condition that can be experienced by anyone and can appear on one or more tooth surfaces. If left untreated, caries can develop deeper, from the enamel to the dentin, and reach the pulp. This disease is one of the most common dental health problems in children and is a major cause of tooth loss at an early age. The high incidence of dental caries in children is influenced by various factors, including bad habits in maintaining dental hygiene and unhealthy eating patterns. The importance of maintaining dental and oral health must be introduced from an early age so that children understand how to maintain dental hygiene properly. Educational activities regarding dental and oral health maintenance aim to increase awareness and knowledge of preschool children, such as those carried out in the program at Istiqbal Ngagel Rejo Kindergarten. The activity method used was counseling (lectures, questions and answers, and demonstrations of brushing teeth) using phantom teeth, toothbrushes, and flip charts. The results of the activity were an increase in the knowledge of preschool children at Istiqbal Kindergarten from the less to sufficient category. However, it did not reach the planned target, namely that the majority received the good category.
