Abstract

Dental health problems occur in many communities, including mental retardation in children with all of their intellectual limitations, social behavior, and sometimes the weakness in motor coordination. The study aimed to develop and to examine the effectiveness of the behavior change therapy model as an alternative to improving the tooth brushing behavior among children with mental retardation. The Research and Development (R&D) approach was applied in this study. The quasi-Experimental, Pre-test, and Post-test with the non-equivalent control group for examining the effect of the model on health outcome. The research subjects of mental retardation children were divided into the intervention group and the control group. Experts tested by the intervention group validated the model development. Expert validation of the behavior change therapy model gets an average of 86.67 (very decent) as an alternative to improving tooth brushing behavior among children with mental retardation with p-value<0.05. Other results found that the model effectively enhanced the knowledge, gesture, and tooth brushing skills in mental retardation children with p-value <0.05. The therapy model as an alternative strategy was useful and recommended improving tooth brushing behavior among mental retardation children

Abstract

Abstract

Providing education in health promotion aims to maintain oral health by focusing on efforts to modify or eliminate the factors that cause it (Gavic, et al., 2021). Health education aims not only to increase literacy related to oral health, but to bring about positive behavioral changes if instilled from an early age (Kay, 1996 cited. Deokar, et al., 2021).The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the Snakes and Ladders game on the behavior of fourth grade students after dental health education with PowerPoint media. This study is included in the type of quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest research design involving a control group. This study involved 100 respondents who were divided into two groups. The intervention group consisted of 50 fourth grade students of MIN 3 Bireuen who received education using PowerPoint media accompanied by a Snakes and Ladders game. While the control group consisted of 26 fourth grade students of MIN 9 and 24 students of MIN 19 who were only given education with PowerPoint media. Each study group received health education 4 times, and behavior-related questionnaires were administered at pretest and posttest I (1 month), and posttest II (3 months). Results: there was a significant difference in behavior in the intervention group (0.014) from pretest to posttest II, but the difference in behavior difference from pretest to posttest in both groups did not show a significant value (0.173). Conclusion: snakes and ladders game given after education with PowerPoint media is not better in improving students' dental health behavior. Abstract

Dental caries is a condition that can be experienced by anyone and can appear on one or more tooth surfaces. If left untreated, caries can develop deeper, from the enamel to the dentin, and reach the pulp. This disease is one of the most common dental health problems in children and is a major cause of tooth loss at an early age. The high incidence of dental caries in children is influenced by various factors, including bad habits in maintaining dental hygiene and unhealthy eating patterns. The importance of maintaining dental and oral health must be introduced from an early age so that children understand how to maintain dental hygiene properly. Educational activities regarding dental and oral health maintenance aim to increase awareness and knowledge of preschool children, such as those carried out in the program at Istiqbal Ngagel Rejo Kindergarten. The activity method used was counseling (lectures, questions and answers, and demonstrations of brushing teeth) using phantom teeth, toothbrushes, and flip charts. The results of the activity were an increase in the knowledge of preschool children at Istiqbal Kindergarten from the less to sufficient category. However, it did not reach the planned target, namely that the majority received the good category.
