Abstract

Seaweed is one of the leading types of aquaculture commodities with competitive market economic value in both domestic and export markets. This is partly because in addition to functioning as food, it is also due to the diversification of seaweed products that have. Wael Hamlet is one of the hamlets located in Piru Village, West Seram District. The majority of people in Wael Hamlet work as fishermen and cultivators, both fish farming and seaweed cultivation. Wael Hamlet is one of the E. Cottoni producing areas in West Seram Regency. The existing condition of seaweed cultivation in Wael Hamlet is currently experiencing a decline and even the fishermen do not produce seaweed. The conclusion of this activity is that the eucheuma cotonii seaweed cultivation business in the hamlet of Wael, West Seram Regency has decreased production due to disease attacks and pests in the form of baronagn fish and also turtles.

Abstract

Konsentrasi nitrat (0,015 mg/l) dan klorofil-a (0,18–3,73 µg/l) tergolong rendah, mengindikasikan kondisi perairan oligotrofik. Kata Kunci: kualitas air, rumput laut, Teluk Kotania, budidaya lautABSTRACTKotania Bay in West Seram Regency has great potential for developing seaweed culture, but its sustainability is highly dependent on the quality of the aquatic environment, both physically, chemically, and biologically. This study aims to analyze water quality parameters that support seaweed culture in the area. Data was collected in May 2025 at 12 sampling stations, covering physical, chemical, and biological parameters through in-situ measurements and laboratory analysis. The results indicate that most water quality parameters such as temperature (29.63–30.04 °C), salinity (33.46–33.85 ppt), pH (7.06–7.65), transparency (6–18 m), dissolved oxygen (9.12–12.38 mg/l), COD (5.20–10.70 mg/l), and BOD (3.40–8.70 mg/l) are within optimal ranges and below the regulatory thresholds. Current velocity ranged from 3.60–24.34 cm/s, and water depth varied between 6–24 meters. Nitrate (0.015 mg/l) and chlorophyll-a (0.18–3.73 µg/l) levels were low, indicating oligotrophic conditions. Conversely, orthophosphate concentrations were relatively high (0.0–0.18 mg/l) at several locations, likely due to anthropogenic activities. Overall, the analysis suggests that Kotania Bay remains suitable for seaweed culture based on its physical, chemical, and biological water quality parameters. Keywords: water quality, seaweed, Kotania Bay, marine aquaculture

Abstract

The waters in Kumul Village are quite clear with rocky bottom conditions and little mud, so it is rich in potential fisheries and communities. Problems that occur in this village include land use conflicts, socio-economic and cultural issues, technology and aspects of cultivation land suitability. The problems faced by farmers from various dimensions require integrated aquaculture management in order to realize targeted and sustainable policies. One of the aspects looked at is the evaluation of aquatic ecological parameters by measuring physical and chemical parameters of the waters. The results of measurements at six research stations starting from April to May 2023 showed that the average temperature range of Kumul Village waters in the East North Aru District of Batuley was in the range of 27.57-28.20°C. DO content 9.47- 11.96 mg/L, pH 7.63-8.37, Salinity 24.45-25.39 ppt, Chlorophyll-a 1.67-2.96 mg/m3, Nitrate 0.11-0.16 mg/L, Phosphate 0.018-0.057 mg/L, Current speed 0.03-0.65 cm/s, Depth 1.55-4.97 m and Turbidity is in the range of 2.26-6.27 FTU. The condition of seawater in Kumul village, Aru Utara Timur sub-district, Batuley has excellent resource potential. The calculation of the carrying capacity of cultivated land obtained the following results the overall area of suitability is 9,243 consisting of St.1 very suitable covering 21.60 Ha, St.2 suitable covering 69.54 Ha and St.3 not suitable covering 1.29 Ha.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the strategy for developing seaweed cultivation businesses in Warialau village, North Aru sub-district, Aru Islands district. To evaluate the sustainability status of seaweed, it is necessary to review the ecological, economic, technological, social and institutional dimensions. This research uses two types of data collection methods, namely primary and secondary data. The results of the ecological dimension analysis show that the physical and chemical water data is in the normal range, the economic dimension shows that the average income of the community is not proportional to the expenditure from seaweed cultivation activities, namely IDR 1,825,000 from capital of IDR 2,800,000. The technology used is relatively simple, both for the seeds used and post-harvest handling. Measurement of the social dimension shows that the majority of the community is at senior high school level 57.1%, followed by junior high school 22.9%, elementary school 14.3% and undergraduate 5.7%. The cultivation system is carried out individually because there is no official institution regarding seaweed development in the future. SWOT and AHP Rapfish were used to test the sustainability of seaweed cultivation businesses in Warialau Village. The Rapfish test results show a 60.5% chance of sustaining cultivation in a good direction, the biggest threat is 40% from pests and diseases. The SWOT test results show total strengths of 1.13 and weaknesses of 11.35.

Abstract

Aru Islands Regency, especially in Sir-Sir Sub-district, there are several villages that are famous for their high potential seaweed resources, one of which is Leiting village. Eucheuma cottonii seaweed cultivation activities had stopped due to disease attacks. At present, the community of Leiting village wants to activate seaweed cultivation activities again, therefore it is necessary to assess the condition of the waters. This study aims to determine the physical-chemical parameters of the waters and analyse the suitability of these physical-chemical parameters for E. cottonii seaweed cultivation. Collection of data directly in the field includes physical-chemical parameters of the waters. Determination of the suitability of parameters for seaweed cultivation in the longline refers to Sirajudin (2009). The level of suitability was determined based on the suitability of physical-chemical parameters of waters for fish farming (Tiskiantoro, 2006). The study results show that the physical parameters of the waters include temperature range (27.20-28.07°C), salinity (28.99-29.61 ppt), brightness (2-4 metres), depth 2-4 metres, and the current strength 0.03-0.32 m/sec. While the range of water chemistry values includes pH (7.65-8.11), DO (6.85-9.52 mg/l), nitrate (0.131-0.153 mg/litre), phosphate (0.04-0.05 mg/litre), and Chlorophyll-a (0.72-3.61 mg/litre). The physico-chemical conditions in the waters of Leiting Village are still within the range of the quality standards for the development of seaweed cultivation. The results of the calculation of the suitability of waters in Leiting village found three consecutive suitability categories, which are very suitable (S1) of 12.24 hectares; conditionally suitable (S2) of 72.81 hectares and unsuitable (S3) of 11.98 hectares. So it can be concluded that seaweed cultivation activities are very feasible in the S1 area with a carrying capacity of 61 units and a capacity of 364 units are feasible in the S2 area.
