Abstract

Elopement is acknowledged as a legitimate and culturally significant form of marital resolution in various indigenous communities. In Siku Village, this practice is known as ‘belaghaian’. This study critically investigates the motivations underlying the Muslim community’s participation in belaghaian and systematically examines the related social actions. Utilizing a qualitative methodology grounded in a sociological framework, the research draws upon Max Weber’s theory of social action. The study obtained primary data through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The results reveal that the motivations for engaging in belaghaian are multifaceted, shaped by economic considerations, concerns about social stigma related to returning home late at night, emotional incentives to sustain romantic relationships, and a strong adherence to traditional and familial values. Furthermore, the community views belaghaian as an effective means of overcoming marital obstacles, preserving family honor, strengthening communal bonds, and aligning with broader Islamic principles. The Weberian analysis indicates that belaghaian encompasses a complex interaction of instrumental-rational, affective, and traditional social actions. Belaghaian persists largely because it integrates cultural customs and religious values into contemporary community life.
