Abstract

Ijen Crater is one of the leading geotourism destinations in Indonesia that combines rare natural phenomena, unique geology, and local educational and cultural values. This study aims to examine sustainable tourism management strategies in the Ijen Crater area with a focus on environmental, social, and economic aspects. Using a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, this study was conducted through a case study that included field observations, documentation, and literature reviews. The results of the study indicate that conservation efforts are carried out through programs such as Ijen Rijik, a zoning system, and community empowerment in the form of homestays, MSMEs, and local transportation such as the "Lamborghini Ijen" trolley. However, challenges such as limited facilities, waste management, no restrictions on visits, and lack of environmental education still hamper sustainability. Therefore, an integrated pentahelix-based strategy is needed that involves the government, community, private sector, academics, and the media. Strengthening facilities, reservation systems, tourist education, and protection of core areas are key to making Ijen Crater a sustainable tourist destination that is not only attractive, but also ecologically and socially responsible.
