Abstract

Ijen Crater is one of the leading geotourism destinations in Indonesia that combines rare natural phenomena, unique geology, and local educational and cultural values. This study aims to examine sustainable tourism management strategies in the Ijen Crater area with a focus on environmental, social, and economic aspects. Using a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, this study was conducted through a case study that included field observations, documentation, and literature reviews. The results of the study indicate that conservation efforts are carried out through programs such as Ijen Rijik, a zoning system, and community empowerment in the form of homestays, MSMEs, and local transportation such as the "Lamborghini Ijen" trolley. However, challenges such as limited facilities, waste management, no restrictions on visits, and lack of environmental education still hamper sustainability. Therefore, an integrated pentahelix-based strategy is needed that involves the government, community, private sector, academics, and the media. Strengthening facilities, reservation systems, tourist education, and protection of core areas are key to making Ijen Crater a sustainable tourist destination that is not only attractive, but also ecologically and socially responsible.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of cleanliness, supporting facilities, and accessibility on tourists’ experience and satisfaction in the tourism public space of Batu Caves, Malaysia. A quantitative method was employed, distributing questionnaires to 73 tourists. The research instrument used a Likert scale, which was validated and tested for reliability before being analyzed descriptively. The findings show that all three variables received high average scores ranging from 3.90 to 4.16, suggesting that tourists perceive the cleanliness, supporting facilities, and accessibility of Batu Caves to be in good condition. Cleanliness and accessibility received the highest evaluations, while supporting facilities were also considered adequate. These factors collectively contributed to high levels of tourist experience and satisfaction, which ranged from 4.04 to 4.15. The study concludes that the quality of public space plays a significant role in shaping tourist satisfaction. Proper management of cleanliness, amenities, and accessibility helps create a positive environment that enhances the overall tourist experience.
