Abstract

This article examines the role of Ragunan Zoo as a medium for wildlife conservation from 1966 to 1993, focusing on its development amidst criticism for prioritizing tourism over conservation. Using historical methodology, the study traces the evolution of Ragunan Zoo from its origins as Planten en Dierentuin during the Dutch colonial era to its transformation into a modern conservation institution. The research highlights key efforts by Ragunan Zoo to address criticism, including the development of animal collections, breeding programs, partnerships with international zoos, and educational initiatives. The research also explores the tangible outcomes of these efforts, such as animal releases, successful breeding programs, and international recognition, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award awarded to Benjamin Galstaun, the zoo's first director. Despite challenges like limited funding and outdated infrastructure, Ragunan Zoo has made significant strides in balancing its roles as a conservation, educational, and recreational institution. The article concludes that Ragunan Zoo's conservation efforts have yielded positive results, contributing to preserving Indonesia's biodiversity while navigating the complexities of its dual role as a tourist attraction and conservation center.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of domestic violence against women in the Thai drama Tie Me (K)not (2022) using Johan Galtung’s theory of violence, which categorizes violence into direct, structural, and cultural forms. Through qualitative content analysis, the research identifies how the drama depicts these forms of violence, reflecting broader societal issues in Thailand. The findings reveal explicit instances of direct violence, such as physical and psychological abuse, systemic structural violence through institutional failures in justice and support systems, and cultural violence rooted in patriarchal traditions that justify gender inequality. The drama not only highlights these oppressive dynamics but also challenges them through the protagonist’s journey toward empowerment. By analyzing these representations, the study underscores the role of media in raising awareness about domestic violence and advocates for societal and policy changes to address gender-based violence in Thailand. This research contributes to discussions on media, gender studies, and violence prevention, emphasizing the need for cultural and structural reforms to protect women’s rights.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Malaysia's orangutan diplomacy as part of public diplomacy and cultural diplomacy in the face of international pressure on the palm oil industry, particularly from the European Union. Inspired by animal diplomacy practices such as China's panda diplomacy, Malaysia in 2024 initiated a plan to make the orangutan a diplomatic symbol to build a positive image and strengthen trade relations with partner countries. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a literature review method that utilizes academic sources, policy documents, non-profit organization reports, and mass and social media. The analysis is conducted through a cultural ecology perspective to understand the relationship between economic and political interests, diplomatic practices, and their impact on the ecology and local communities. The results of the study indicate that orangutan diplomacy has the potential to reduce the animal to a symbolic instrument of the state, while simultaneously obscuring structural problems such as deforestation and the expansion of oil palm plantations that threaten the orangutan's natural habitat. Objections from various conservation organizations state that without a strong commitment to in situ conservation and forest ecosystem protection, this diplomacy tends to be symbolic and counterproductive. This article argues that animal diplomacy should not be separated from ecological and cultural responsibilities, especially in the context of environmental ecosystems and the relationship between people and animals as part of a shared ecological system.
