Abstract

Agroforestry management plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of the dusung system by supporting both the local economy and environmental conservation. This study aims to examine the management of nutmeg-based agroforestry and to analyze the economic value of the dusung agroforestry farming system as a source of household income for farmers. A descriptive-exploratory method with a non-experimental approach was used, employing data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, questionnaires, literature review, and documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively through tabulation and interpretation, in line with the objectives of the study. The results show that dusung management is carried out hereditarily by farming families using a mixed cropping system that combines nutmeg with other crops on the same plot of land. Maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest processing activities are conducted independently and still rely on local knowledge. This management model reflects a form of traditional agroforestry that is adaptive to the social and ecological conditions of the community.

Abstract

Agroforestry is a form of land use carried out by the community, namely a combination pattern of agricultural crops, plantations and forestry. Currently, agroforestry management practices have been widely implemented and provide many benefits both economically, ecologically and culturally. Waai Country, which is located in the Salahutu sub-district, Central Maluku Regency, generally has residents who earn their living as farmers and fishermen. People in Waai country still apply traditional agroforestry management patterns, namely dusung, which is a form of local wisdom in Maluku that is still maintained from generation to generation. The partners' priority problems are decreasing land productivity which directly affects land yields, lack of public interest, especially generations, in farming, and not enriching the types of forestry plants in the hamlets. The solution offered to partners is the realization and stages of activities carrying out extension activities, training activities and planting 100 MPTs (Multi Purpose Tree Species) plant saplings in the village, which will provide various results for the sustainability of the ecosystem and community economy.

Abstract

Dusung is a traditional agroforestry system of the Maluku people, inherited across generations as an ecological, economic, and cultural strategy for land management. This study aims to identify the plant combinations and cropping patterns applied by the community in Kamarian Village, Kairatu Subdistrict, West Seram Regency. The research employed a descriptive approach using qualitative and quantitative techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation involving ten dusung owners selected by purposive sampling. The results show two main patterns in the dusung system, namely Tree Along Border (TAB) and Mixture Random. The TAB pattern is characterized by planting forestry species such as Alstonia scholaris, Erythrina variegata, and Gliricidia sepium along the field edges as natural fences, while the central area is filled with plantation and fruit crops such as nutmeg, clove, coconut, durian, langsat, and mango. Meanwhile, the Mixture Random pattern features irregular planting with higher species diversity, including food crops such as sago, banana, pineapple, and cassava. The choice of plant combinations is influenced by economic value, ecological suitability, socio-cultural significance, and local seed availability. Overall, the dusung system plays an essential role in maintaining ecosystem balance, improving household livelihoods, and preserving the cultural identity of the Kamarian community.
