Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of employment status on mental health by comparing self-employed and wage-employed individuals in Indonesia. Using longitudinal data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) waves 4 and 5, this study applies a fixed effects model to explore this relationship while accounting for various demographic and socioeconomic controls. The findings reveal that self-employed individuals have higher mental health scores, indicating poorer mental health compared to wage-employed individuals. However, this effect becomes insignificant after including control variables in the model. Job transition analysis indicates that individuals transitioning from self-employment to wage-employment tend to have higher mental health scores, while those remaining in wage employment exhibit a lower risk of mental health issues. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that self-employed women are more vulnerable to mental health issues compared to men, while individuals with disabilities demonstrate better mental health in self-employment than in wage employment.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the Village Fund policy on reducing criminal incidents in Indonesian villages through improvements in environmental security systems. Utilizing a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach within a Poisson regression model, the study examines the effects of the Village Fund policy implementation across 36,889 villages during the 2011–2021 period. The analysis reveals that, following the implementation of the Village Fund policy, villages in the treatment group—characterized by relatively low environmental security systems—experienced a 0.937 times lower variation in criminal incidents compared to villages with high environmental security levels, with a statistical significance of 1%. These findings indicate that infrastructure development, community empowerment, and the enhancement of environmental security systems in more vulnerable areas contribute significantly to the reduction of criminal incidents in Indonesian villages.

Abstract

Indonesia’s Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) programme is among the largest school feeding initiatives globally, yet its rapid scale-up has outpaced the development of a robust monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) framework capable of assessing welfare-relevant outcomes. This paper examines whether pre-existing national survey instruments can be leveraged to strengthen outcome monitoring in the absence of MBG-specific microdata. Focusing on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) collected through Indonesia’s National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas), the study first situates experiential food insecurity within Indonesia’s broader food security landscape. It then applies a propensity score matching framework using participation in the Bantuan Pangan Non-Tunai (BPNT) programme as an illustrative case to assess the responsiveness of FIES to food assistance exposure. The results demonstrate that experiential food insecurity captures dimensions of vulnerability that are not fully reflected in consumption-based indicators. The measure also responds to food and dietary access related interventions. The paper argues that integrating FIES into MBG’s MEL architecture offers a feasible, scalable, and analytically robust approach to monitoring short- to medium-term programme outcomes and supports adaptive implementation of MBG.

Abstract

An important element in entrepreneurship is being alert to unexploited opportunities. In the context of entrepreneurial development, internet users in Indonesia continue to increase but the percentage of young people using the internet for business remains low. This study analyzes the effect of internet usage on the income of young entrepreneurs in Indonesia using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method and Propensity Score Matching (PSM). The results show that internet usage significantly increases the income of youth entrepreneurs. Internet usage for communication contributes positively to their income but usage for promotion, social media and marketplaces does not affect their income.
