Abstract

This study investigates the structure of signs in the British film Awaydays (2009) using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory. Saussure conceptualizes signs as a combination of the signifier (the physical form) and the signified (the conceptual meaning), which together produce meaning within a linguistic and cultural system. The research treats the film not merely as entertainment but as a cultural text embedded with symbolic messages. Through a descriptive qualitative method, the study identifies and interprets various signs present in visual and verbal elements, including costumes, music, facial expressions, locations, and dialogue. These signs are analyzed in relation to themes of identity, subculture, alienation, and personal transformation. Particular emphasis is placed on how the protagonist, Carty, and his interactions with “The Pack” represent internal struggles and external pressures within the context of 1970s English football hooliganism. The findings show that the film uses semiotic structures to explore issues of masculinity, belonging, and youth rebellion. It reflects how signs operate not only to build narrative coherence but also to reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies. This analysis highlights the capacity of cinema to function as a site of meaning-making through structured sign systems. By applying Saussure’s theoretical framework, the study demonstrates that semiotics can provide critical insight into the ways films communicate complex social and psychological themes.

Abstract

This study investigates the theme of social mobility as portrayed in the film Goal! The Dream Begins, focusing on the life journey of the main character, Santiago Muñez. It aims to examine the character's experience of social mobility and identify the key factors that contribute to his transformation. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research adopts a sociological approach to literature, using Sorokin’s theory of social mobility as the analytical framework. The study closely analyzes selected dialogues from the film to uncover how Santiago’s background, personal ambition, talent in football, and support from key individuals influence his mobility. The findings indicate that Santiago undergoes upward vertical social mobility, reflected in his transition from a low-income, working-class background to a successful professional footballer. This shift demonstrates not only a rise in his economic standing but also a significant improvement in his social status. In the end, the film emphasizes that personal determination, available opportunities, and social connections are crucial in facilitating social mobility, particularly when sports serve as a channel for transformation.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve English pronunciation skills among teenagers in the North Meruya Youth Community in West Jakarta. The implementation method included training based on artificial intelligence (AI) applications such as Elsa Speak, which provides automatic feedback to improve articulation, intonation, and word emphasis. The activity was accompanied by mentoring through online groups and pre- and post-test evaluations using a scoring rubric on a scale of 1-5. Results showed that more than 90% of participants experienced a pronunciation score increase of at least 30%, with participant satisfaction levels reaching over 80%. The training successfully established independent study groups and increased participant confidence. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of using AI technology in community-based English learning, with potential for replication in other regions.
