Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning, function, and dynamics of the Sipaha Lima ritual within the Parmalim belief system in Medan City, as well as the adaptation strategies employed by its community in an urban and modern context. This research is significant because Sipaha Lima is not only a spiritual practice but also a marker of local cultural identity that is vulnerable to marginalization amid globalization and dominant socio-cultural pressures. The study adopts a qualitative approach based on anthropological theory, particularly Victor Turner’s concept of ritual and theories of cultural identity. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with key informants from the Parmalim community, and document analysis. The findings reveal that Sipaha Lima functions as a medium for community unity, internal solidarity, and the transmission of Batak noble values to the younger generation. The Parmalim community also demonstrates creative adaptation efforts through the use of digital technology and openness to interfaith dialogue. The study concludes that the continuation of the Sipaha Lima ritual reflects the cultural and spiritual resilience of the Parmalim community, while also serving as a form of resistance against stigmatization and the erosion of local values. Broader recognition and systematic documentation are necessary to ensure the preservation of this practice within Indonesia’s diverse cultural framework.

Abstract

The Dialogue between the Qur’an and the Bible on Religious Moderation. The problem formulation of this study is how the concept of dialogue between the Qur’an and the Bible on religious moderation is, and what the mechanism of dialogue between the Qur’an and the Bible on religious moderation is. This study aims to: 1) understand the concept of dialogue between the Qur’an and the Bible on religious moderation, and 2) understand the mechanism of dialogue between the Qur’an and the Bible on religious moderation. The approach used is a normative theological approach, which seeks to understand religion using a framework of divine knowledge based on a belief that the empirical reality of a religion is considered the truest compared to others. The theoretical approach used is inductive, a thought process that starts from specific rules (events or matters) to determine a general rule (principle). The findings of this study show that dialogue, which is presented in written form, is presented as a conversation between two or more figures, straightforwardly, and also involves questions and answers regarding a problem as desired. The results of this research indicate that in both Islam and Christianity, dialogue teaches how to understand and tolerate each other in religious moderation. Therefore, both religions, especially the Qur’an and the Bible, understand that the dialogue mentioned serves to convey a message to others, aiming to touch the fundamental values of religion.

Abstract

This study explores the development of neo-spiritualism among youth, particularly in Kelurahan Kenangan, Lingkungan VII, Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan. Neo-spiritualism emerges as a new form of spirituality that is more flexible, personal, and detached from formal religious doctrines, responding to the spiritual emptiness experienced in modern life and the declining authority of traditional religious institutions. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research investigates the spiritual experiences and perspectives of youth through interviews, questionnaires, and literature studies. The findings reveal that many adolescents are open to modern spiritual practices such as meditation, self-healing, journaling, and mindfulness, often discovered through social media platforms. The primary drivers behind the growth of neo-spiritualism include the desire for a more personal spiritual experience and the influential role of digital media as a space for exploring life’s meaning. Despite this trend, the study identifies diverse spiritual characteristics, some youth fully detach from formal religion, while others maintain Islamic beliefs while adopting contemporary practices. This research provides insights into the shifting patterns of religiosity at the local level and highlights the importance of contextual and adaptive spiritual approaches in guiding today’s younger generation
