Abstract

This research explains the scholarly polemics surrounding the concept of Nuzul al-Qur'an (the revelation of the Qur'an), focusing specifically on the debate over which verse was revealed first and which was revealed last. The main research questions are: How do scholars differ in their views on the chronology of Qur'anic revelation? And how should these differences be understood and addressed? This research adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in the sciences of ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān, with particular reference to classical Islamic scholarship, especially Al-Itqān fī ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān by Imam al-Suyūṭī. The findings reveal multiple perspectives among scholars regarding the first revealed verse. These include: (1) Surah Al-‘Alaq:1 ("Iqra’ bismi rabbika"), (2) Surah Al-Muddaththir:1 ("Yā ayyuhā al-muddaththir"), (3) the entirety of Surah Al-Fātiḥah, and (4) the verse "Bismillāhirraḥmānirraḥīm." Similarly, there are varying opinions regarding the last verse revealed: (1) Surah Al-Baqarah:281, (2) Surah Al-Mā’idah:3, and (3) Surah Al-Baqarah:278. These differences reflect the depth and complexity of Islamic scholarship and underscore the importance of a respectful and contextual approach in dealing with interpretive diversity within the Islamic tradition.
