Abstract

This study aims to analyze communication design in wayang as a learning medium in multicultural education. Wayang,as one of Indonesia's cultural heritages, has great potential to be used as an educational tool that teaches the values of multiculturalism. In the context of education, wayang not only functions as a means of entertainment, but also as an effective medium to convey diverse moral, social, and cultural messages. This study uses a case study method with a focus on the analysis of communication design elements contained in wayang performances, such as narratives, visuals, characters, and interactions with the audience.Data were obtained through observations of wayang performances, interviews with puppeteers and education experts, and analysis of related literature. In addition, this study also explores how wayang can be integrated into the education curriculum to strengthen students' understanding of cultural diversity, tolerance, and social harmony. The results of the study indicate that communication design in wayang has flexible and adaptive characteristics, so that it can be adjusted to different learning contexts. Wayang displays rich and diverse cultural symbols, which can introduce students to the plurality of identities and traditions in Indonesia. In addition, the interaction between the puppeteer and the audience allows for dynamic and participatory dialogue, which is important in the process of multicultural education. The conclusion of this study is that wayang has great potential as a learning medium that supports multicultural education. Therefore, the integration of wayang in formal and informal learning can be an effective strategy in enriching students' learning experiences in the context of multicultural education.

Abstract

Indonesia's cultural diversity is frequently used as a visual theme in visual communication design (VCD) products such as posters, packaging, advertisements, and social media content. However, the way multicultural identity is depicted often tends to be symbolic and stereotypical rather than substantive. This study aims to analyze how multicultural identity is represented in Indonesian visual communication design works and to identify the visual patterns and ideological tendencies that emerge within them. This research uses a qualitative descriptive-interpretive method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, examining denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in a purposive sample of visual works published between 2020 and 2025. The data were obtained through visual documentation, literature review, and interviews with practicing designers. The results show that multicultural representation in Indonesian VCD tends to appear in three patterns: ethnic-ornamental representation that emphasizes traditional attributes, religious-symbolic representation that highlights houses of worship and ritual objects, and inclusive-narrative representation that portrays everyday interaction among diverse groups. Ornamental representation dominates commercial works, while inclusive-narrative representation is more common in social campaigns. The study concludes that visual communication design has significant potential to construct an inclusive collective identity, provided that designers move beyond decorative multiculturalism toward contextual and participatory representation involving the communities being depicted.
