Abstract

TThe purpose of this research and art creation is to create and present artworks with “Toya Campuhan: Water and Human Civilization” as the source of inspiration. World civilization, especially in ancient Bali, has emerged and developed around water as its source of life. Water sources, such as river confluences, act as a pulse, supporting the joints that contribute significantly to various parts of physical and spiritual life. Due to this, water must be conserved, so that they always provide benefits for the journey of human life far into the future. However, the current condition of rivers in Bali is really worrying, as various pollutants pollute them. Slowly but surely, the water condition will worsen if we continue to let it be. This evokes my empathy, emotion, and hope about a healthy river confluence as a mission that I wanted to convey through the creation of this painting. This creation model becomes a cultural expression as a medium for increasing public appreciation to raise the spirit of ecological resilience over the problem of water pollution. This creation is based on research, where the method consists of two parts, namely the research method and the creation method. The research method uses an anthropological approach, especially related to ethnography. Meanwhile, the creation method passes through three stages: exploration, improvisation, and the embodiment of the work, which is preceded by a study of similar works of art and literature review.

Abstract

This study aims to analyses the characteristics of portraiture in realistic tattoo art, one of the most popular tattoo styles today. The main focus of this research is to identify the key elements that make portrait tattoos look realistic and lifelike, as well as the techniques used by tattoo artists to achieve these results. This research is part of the MBKM internship report and employs a descriptive qualitative research method. Data were collected through interviews with tattoo artists experienced in the realistic style, direct observation during the tattoo-making process, and photographic documentation of their works. Content analysis was used to identify common features that define realistic portrait tattoos, such as accuracy in capturing facial proportions, placement of light and shadow, and the use of smooth shading gradients to create depth effects, along with attention to small details that enhance the realistic impression. The main findings of this study show that accuracy in depicting facial expressions and skin texture significantly impacts the quality of realistic portrait tattoos. Additionally, a deep understanding of facial anatomy and proficiency in ink application and colour gradients are crucial factors. The implications of this research suggest that mastering these techniques not only improves the quality of tattoos but also promotes the development of the realism style within the tattoo art industry.

Abstract

This work serves as a visual expression rooted in deep concern over environmental exploitation and the ongoing degradation of marine ecosystems. Through a sustainable fashion approach, this couture garment is crafted using post-consumer materials such as discarded denim, damaged compact discs, and plastic bottles, serving as a critical response to the consumerist culture that negatively impacts nature. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing the stages of exploration, experimentation, and formation as outlined by Alma M. Hawkins. It also incorporates the humanistic philosophy of Pramoedya Ananta Toer as a cultural lens to frame the narrative. The creative process reveals that fashion design can be a powerful medium for ecological critique, offering an alternative narrative that fosters collective environmental awareness. This work affirms that fashion is not merely about visual aesthetics, but also a space of resistance—one that advocates for humanity and sustainability.

Abstract

This article discusses about Senandung tak Bertahta exhibition which departs from the situation and conditions of Balinese society in the frame of socialist realism Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Balinese society is still struggling to meet their living needs behind the glittering tourism sector. Take for example the Kerobokan area of Bali which is always under pressure with the rate of growth, between struggling, surviving, actually giving up, especially on the issue of land which is squeezed and lured by investors' enticements. The data source was obtained through a qualitative approach using a descriptive analysis method by utilizing library media. The Senandung tak Bertahta exhibition is a representative to voice the phenomenon, through three works that represent the voices of the buried community, the context of body ownership and the issue of fake identity. The Senandung tak bertahta exhibition will be studied using the theory of Socialist Realism which is in line with Pramoedya's thoughts and the works will be studied using theories by Adorno, Foucault and Julia Kristeva which describe the problem of the helplessness of society which is in line with the context of socialist realism. By studying symbolic elements, visual composition, and social context, this exhibition shows how contemporary art is still relevant as a medium for the struggle of lower-class discourse, as proposed in Pramoedya's literature.

Abstract

This study explores Balinese culture through Dark Art to depict the grandeur and complexity of the community's spirituality. Dark Art, with its dark tones and profound symbolism, reflects the mystical power and sacredness of nature represented by mythological figures like Dewi Durga. In Balinese culture, Dewi Durga symbolizes the formidable forces of nature, revered through various rituals and arts. Her portrayal in a horror-themed style emphasizes not only the terrifying aspects but also the majesty and sacred mystery of nature. Dark Art elements such as horror nuances and Rangda masks enhance the symbolism of the niskala (spiritual) world, a vital aspect of Balinese life. The Rangda mask, often associated with negative forces, represents diseases or spiritual disturbances that are addressed through traditional rituals. The use of these elements illustrates how Balinese people maintain balance between physical and spiritual aspects. The study's artistic outcomes combine Dark Art aesthetics with Balinese traditions, creating a profound visual interpretation of the community's views on nature and spirituality. This approach highlights the significance of the niskala realm in Balinese culture, particularly in preserving harmony in life. The research contributes to understanding how Balinese art and culture utilize Dark Art symbolism to express their beliefs and spiritual practices.

Abstract

The issue of environmental pollution due to household waste, office waste, agricultural waste, and livestock waste, which has become a global issue, requires a solution. One type of waste that is quite commonly found in several environmental units of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, ISI Bali, is used paper waste. Practical materials for the realistic sculpture course in the Fine Arts Laboratory of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design initially used Jogja clay and plasticine as the forming materials, but over time these materials became difficult to obtain because they had to be transported from Jogja, which required a large cost to get to Denpasar. For this reason, the creation and testing of substitute materials that have almost the same characteristics or perhaps have advantages over the previous material, namely in the form of paper clay. The purpose of this research is to solve the problem of scarcity of clay practical materials and be able to overcome environmental problems, especially used paper waste in laboratories and several units within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design ISI Bali. The creation process includes the exploration stage, the improvisation stage, and the composition stage (forming). The results of the research obtained are that clay from used paper as a practical material is very easy to obtain and produce and is much more economical when compared to sculpture soil. The characteristics of paper clay are better than sculpture soil, such as having a higher level of strength, smaller shrinkage, easier to shape and stick, and faster drying time.
