Abstract

This article analyzes in depth how adolescents actively construct and present their multiple identities on popular social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. The analytical approach uses Erving Goffman’s dramaturgy theoretical framework, which views social interaction as a performance. This study specifically explores how the key concepts of “front stage” and “back stage” operate in the digital ecosystem, and highlights the crucial role of “impression management” in adolescents’ attempts to strategically present themselves. Using a comprehensive literature review approach, this article first dissects Goffman’s dramaturgy theory and its relevant core concepts in detail. Next, this theory is integrated with findings from recent studies published between 2019 and 2025, which specifically apply Goffman’s perspective to adolescents’ digital communication behavior and identity construction issues. The analysis shows that social media fundamentally functions as a complex dramaturgical arena. Here, adolescents, both consciously and unconsciously, present “performances” of identity that have been carefully tailored to specific audiences and changing digital contexts. This phenomenon often blurs the boundaries between real identity and constructed representation, creating an interesting dynamic in the formation of adolescent self in the digital era.

Abstract

This research investigates the intricate construction of visual and verbal meanings within Marjan’s Instagram advertisements during the 2024 Ramadan season and explores how these semiotic configurations stimulate consumer purchase intention. Adopting a qualitative paradigm underpinned by Ferdinand de Saussure’s structuralist semiotics, the study deconstructs the dyadic relationship between signifiers and signifieds in digital promotional content. Systematic observation of visual markers, including the brand logo, the signature red syrup bottle, young coconut motifs, Ramadan lanterns, and desert landscapes, reveals a deliberate orchestration of brand identity, sensory freshness, spiritual enlightenment, and cultural nostalgia. Concurrently, verbal signifiers such as the slogan "Breaking the Fast Becomes Sweeter" function as anchors that solidify the brand’s positioning as an indispensable cultural artifact of the holy month. The findings demonstrate that Marjan’s advertising efficacy is rooted in its ability to synthesize religious symbolism with local cultural values, thereby enhancing brand resonance and effectively catalyzing purchase intention among Indonesian Muslim consumers. This study contributes to the discourse on digital marketing communication by elucidating the role of semiotic precision in capturing the cultural zeitgeist of religious festivities.

Abstract

This article examines the intricate dynamics of social communication and language within the recently released Squid Game Season 3, focusing intensely on how participants attempt to navigate and manage complex interpersonal relationships while subjected to extreme duress and fatal competition. Employing the Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT) as its core analytical framework, this study systematically explores the immense challenges players encounter in establishing mutual trust, forming reliable alliances, and accurately interpreting often-deceptive verbal and non-verbal cues within an environment meticulously designed to breed suspicion and intense rivalry. The hypothetical scenarios developed for Squid Game Season 3 reveal how the inherent and manufactured uncertainty of the game, amplified by deliberate strategic deception and systematic manipulation perpetrated by both fellow players and the game organizers, severely impedes all forms of effective communication and voluntary cooperation. Crucially, the analysis identifies that the consistent failure to adequately reduce cognitive and behavioural uncertainty regarding others significantly contributes to players' profound isolation and extreme vulnerability, thereby directly and often fatally impacting their core survival strategies and crucial in-game decisions. Ultimately, this comprehensive theoretical analysis provides valuable insights into fundamental human communication behaviour when placed in high-stakes, zero-sum, life-or-death contexts, highlighting communication's critical role as both a survival tool and a catastrophic vulnerability.
