Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs and challenges of English language learning as a key component of musical communication in the internationally recognized context of angklung and bamboo music. The needs analysis focuses on four themes: contextual musical needs, challenges specific to the music context, psychosocial influences, and relevant teaching strategies. The study employs a qualitative case study design using purposive sampling. Data were collected through three techniques: interviews with three music lecturers based on their expertise, classroom observations, and analysis of relevant documents. The data were analyzed using a six-stage qualitative analysis process. The findings reveal that current English instruction is not fully contextualized or applicable to the communicative needs of music, both spoken and written. Key challenges include limited academic writing skills and the insufficient integration of traditional music vocabulary with English. Student-related internal factors, such as lack of discipline and responsibility, also hinder the learning process. However, learning strategies that are engaging and aligned with musical practice can enhance students' English proficiency. Future research should focus more specifically on angklung and bamboo music contexts, including the development of appropriate teaching methods, standardized interactive angklung templates, and a glossary of traditional music terms with accurate English equivalents.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This research investigates the intricate construction of visual and verbal meanings within Marjan’s Instagram advertisements during the 2024 Ramadan season and explores how these semiotic configurations stimulate consumer purchase intention. Adopting a qualitative paradigm underpinned by Ferdinand de Saussure’s structuralist semiotics, the study deconstructs the dyadic relationship between signifiers and signifieds in digital promotional content. Systematic observation of visual markers, including the brand logo, the signature red syrup bottle, young coconut motifs, Ramadan lanterns, and desert landscapes, reveals a deliberate orchestration of brand identity, sensory freshness, spiritual enlightenment, and cultural nostalgia. Concurrently, verbal signifiers such as the slogan "Breaking the Fast Becomes Sweeter" function as anchors that solidify the brand’s positioning as an indispensable cultural artifact of the holy month. The findings demonstrate that Marjan’s advertising efficacy is rooted in its ability to synthesize religious symbolism with local cultural values, thereby enhancing brand resonance and effectively catalyzing purchase intention among Indonesian Muslim consumers. This study contributes to the discourse on digital marketing communication by elucidating the role of semiotic precision in capturing the cultural zeitgeist of religious festivities.

Abstract

This study aims to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an ensemble-based learning model in English language learning for vocational students majoring in Angklung and Bamboo Music. The research method used was classroom action research (CAR) conducted in two learning cycles. Data were collected through observation, reflection, and pretest–posttest to assess the development of students' language skills. The analysis showed an increase in average grades and student participation, although not very significant when calculated as a whole (average N-Gain <0.1). However, when only active students were counted, there was a more pronounced increase, with average attendance increasing from 67% to 70%. Qualitatively, students showed improvements in cooperation, self-confidence, and communication skills in a musical context. These findings indicate that ensemble-based learning is effective in increasing student engagement and motivation, especially for those who actively participate. This approach is relevant for vocational education because it is able to integrate elements of musicality with English communication in a contextual and creative manner. Keywords: ensemble-based learning, classroom action research, music vocational education, English for specific purpose

Abstract

This article analyzes in depth how nonverbal communication elements function as a system of signs and symbols to convey meaning, emotion, and narrative in contemporary physical theater performances. By highlighting gestures, mimics, body postures, proxemics (the use of personal space), and the use of stage space, this research explores the crucial role of the body in creating a rich artistic language, often without or with minimal verbal dialogue. Through a qualitative literature review informed by Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach, this article examines Saussure's theoretical framework, particularly the concepts of the signifier and the signified, the arbitrary and conventional nature of signs, and their application in the critique of physical theater performances. This methodology allows for the dismantling of the complex signifying system in the performance, where every movement and expression is part of a larger system of meaning. The results show that non-verbal communication in physical theater is a complex and integrated semiotic system that allows the audience to interpret layers of meaning through the interaction of visual and spatial signs, grounded in the dynamic relationship between signifier and signified. This research contributes to a richer understanding of the expressive power of physical theater and the potential of Saussure's semiotics in analyzing the depth of non-verbal communication in contemporary performance art.
