Abstract

This research examines the pastoral strategy of the Diocese of Ruteng Church in responding to the rise of patronage politics in the Manggarai region post-reformation. Using a public theology approach, the objective of this research is to analyze how the Church voices ethical and faith-based values amidst a corrupt local political context. Through a qualitative literature review method that examines official Church documents such as pastoral letters and synod documents, it was found that the Church's involvement has thus far been more educational-moral in nature. This strategy is realized through practical efforts such as public animation to cultivate a culture of shame and honesty, the radicalization of ethical attitudes through education and anti-money politics campaigns, and urging democratic institutions to operate fairly. Although this effort is an important public contribution, the research concludes that this approach has not yet effectively addressed the structural roots of patronage politics. Therefore, it is recommended that the Church deepens its involvement by integrating its moral and spiritual approach with more focused structural advocacy and cross-sectoral collaboration to realize a more holistic social change and a dignified democracy.

Abstract

The Mount Lewotobi eruption disaster on November 4, 2024 has attracted the attention of many parties, including the Caritas Larantuka institution. Since the incident occurred, this institution has been involved in advocating for the victims. Viewed from a pastoral counseling perspective, for the author, Caritas Larantuka's involvement is not just a social response. However, it represents the presence of a shepherd (counselor) to restore the victims' (clients') wounds. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The results show that the Caritas Larantuka institution has contributed to overcoming the wounds of the victims of the Mount Lewotobi eruption disaster. In a fast and collaborative work system, this institution is present like a counselor who gets closer to the victims. It is present to restore the trauma and wounds of the victims. Bencana letusan Gunung Lewotobi pada 4 November 2024 mengundang atensi dari banyak pihak, termasuk dari lembaga Caritas Larantuka. Sejak peristiwa itu terjadi, lembaga ini turut terlibat mengadvokasi para korban. Ditinjau dari perspektif pastoral konseling, bagi penulis, keterlibatan Caritas Larantuka bukan sekadar respons sosial. Namun, ia merepresentasikan kehadiran gembala (konselor) untuk memulihkan keterlukaan korban (klien). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa lembaga Caritas Larantuka turut berkontribusi dalam mengatasi keterlukaan korban bencana letusan Gunung Lewotobi. Dalam sistem kerja yang cekat dan kolaboratif, lembaga ini hadir bak konselor yang mendekatkan diri dengan para korban. Ia hadir untuk memulihkan trauma dan keterlukaan para korban.
