Abstract

Advances in technology and information have brought about changes in modern society. Modern society can change perspectives and blur religious values that were previously believed. Religious leaders play a crucial role in internalising religious values within modern society. This study examines the role of religious leaders from the perspective of strategies and challenges in internalising religious values. The study participants were religious leaders from Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic faiths, totaling ten informants. This research employs a case study approach. The results of this study indicate that the religious values internalised in modern society have the meaning of love for God, humanity, and nature, manifested in strong compassion and tolerance. The role of religious leaders is crucial as intermediaries through strategies that begin with themselves, serving as good examples in society and adopting more humanistic approaches towards modern society. In addition, religious leaders utilise social media such as YouTube to convey religious values. Efforts to maximise the role of religious leaders face challenges, including the fact that modern society has its own set of values that sometimes do not align with religious teachings, prioritising materialistic aspects and wealth as the result of hard work, leading to a lack of belief in God

Abstract

The provision of adequate clean water is a form of fulfilling the basic needs of the community, which is very important for supporting good health and quality of life. Kelindang Atas Village still has problems in the management and rehabilitation of domestic water channels. This community service initiative aims to optimize clean water supply by assisting the community in developing a Cost Estimate Plan (CEP) for the rehabilitation of domestic water supply systems. The methods used include observing the condition of water supply systems, conducting outreach on CEP development, and facilitating group discussions with village residents as partners. The results of the community service initiative demonstrate an increase in community understanding of the planning and budgeting processes for rehabilitation, as well as the development of a realistic and field-appropriate RAB. Resulted in a 60% increase in budgeting accuracy as measured by alignment with field conditions. Active community involvement in the RAB development process through guidance is the key to the success of optimizing clean water supply in Kelindang Atas Village.

Abstract

Religion serves not only as a spiritual guide but also as a powerful mechanism of social control, shaping behavior and fostering social cohesion through internalized values and norms. In highly pluralistic societies such as Indonesia, understanding how diverse religious traditions shape social regulation is critical. However, comparative interfaith analyses remain scarce. This qualitative descriptive study investigates the role of religion as a tool of social control from an interfaith perspective in Bengkulu City, Indonesia. Ten religious leaders representing Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, and Buddhism were selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model, within the framework of Kelman's Social Influence Theory. The findings indicate that all five religions promote core values—discipline, compassion, justice, and respect—that function as mechanisms of social regulation. Three key themes emerged: (1) moral discipline and self-regulation, (2) love and social harmony, and (3) ethical control and communal cohesion. These values are internalized through stages of compliance, identification, and internalization. While methods differ—from karmic beliefs in Hinduism to communal rituals in Islam—all traditions foster moral accountability and contribute to societal stability. Religion operates both vertically (between adherents and the divine) and horizontally (among community members), embedding both formal and informal social sanctions. Despite theological differences, shared moral imperatives strengthen interfaith understanding and reinforce social order. This study affirms the enduring relevance of religion in shaping ethical behavior in multicultural societies and calls for further exploration of its evolving role amid changing socio-political landscapes.
