Abstract

Lake Toba features a diverse array of geological landscapes and rock formations, alongside globally acknowledged cultural and biological variety. The geological diversity of the Lake Toba caldera possesses significant Geological Heritage value. This region possesses significant potential as a premier tourism destination and merits inclusion in a worldwide geopark. A survey in Silahisabungan District identified desolate, landslide-prone regions along the shores of Lake Toba that remain uncultivated. Simultaneously, a significant portion of the region is allocated for ecotourism. Should the tourist site suffer escalating degradation owing to desolation, it is anticipated that the influx of visitors to the Silahisabungan region will likewise diminish. If the community's economic revenue relies exclusively on the tourism industry, the economy would undoubtedly face challenges; therefore, economic income must be derived from several sectors. Consequently, the region urgently requires the implementation of tree planting initiatives, particularly including 1,500 productive tree types. Productive tree seedlings will be cultivated in five villages: Paropo, Paropo I, Silalahi I, Silalahi II, and Silalahi III, located in the Silahisabungan District of Dairi Regency, North Sumatra. The tree planting initiatives are anticipated to yield economic benefits for the community through fruit harvests. This planting initiative would enhance the local economy while reforesting desolate area, hence drawing tourists to Silahisabungan.

Abstract

This community service program involves innovative waste management based on appropriate technology, utilizing the smart waste management concept, which processes agricultural and livestock waste into renewable energy sources such as organic fertilizer. The program was conducted in Bekiung Village, Kuala District, Langkat Regency, where cow dung and palm oil waste are the primary waste products. Through composting or co-composting, these two products can be converted into high-quality organic fertilizer that improves soil fertility. The core of the community service program is to create a community-based, sustainable waste management model that integrates simple technology, training, and mentoring. The goal is to reduce pollution, boost the local economy through waste-based industries, and support renewable energy and socio-ecological sustainability for the well-being of the village community.

Abstract

This Focus Group Discussion (FGD) aims to formulate strategies to strengthen the resilience of the Siponjot Village community through non-formal education and the planting of productive trees as efforts toward disaster mitigation and welfare improvement. Siponjot Village faces potential vulnerability to natural disasters such as landslides and floods, influenced by its geographical conditions and land-use patterns. Through the FGD, which involved village authorities, community leaders, farmer groups, and youth representatives, the need to enhance community capacity in environmental management through participatory educational approaches was identified. Non-formal education initiatives were designed to improve knowledge of disaster mitigation, land conservation, and skills in cultivating and managing productive trees. The planting of productive trees was selected as an integrated strategy because it strengthens soil structure, reduces disaster risks, and provides long-term economic benefits. The results of the FGD indicate increased collective awareness, collaborative commitment among stakeholders, and the development of a community-based action plan. Therefore, integrating non-formal education with productive tree planting represents a sustainable empowerment model to enhance both community resilience and rural welfare.

Abstract

This Focus Group Discussion (FGD) aims to identify strategies for optimizing corn chips (emping jagung) production through the implementation of innovative equipment technology in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Bekiung Village, Langkat Regency. Bekiung Village is known as an agricultural area with abundant corn production, where corn is processed into emping jagung as a local snack product. However, the processing activities are still conducted manually, which limits production capacity and efficiency and becomes an obstacle in supporting the agricultural sector that remains the main economic pillar of the village. Through the FGD involving community members, village authorities, and the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) Bangun Mandiri Bekiung, various issues related to production constraints and technology needs were discussed. As a result, the implementation of innovative equipment technology was introduced as a practical solution to improve the efficiency and quality of corn processing. The program includes socialization on the benefits of corn processing, training on transforming corn into economically valuable products, provision of appropriate technology equipment to assist production, as well as continuous mentoring and evaluation to maintain product quality and market competitiveness. The results of the FGD indicate an increase in community understanding of technology utilization, stronger collaboration between stakeholders, and the development of a sustainable production improvement strategy. Therefore, the integration of community participation through FGD and the application of innovative equipment technology represents an effective approach to enhance productivity, strengthen rural economic resilience, and support the sustainable development of MSMEs in Bekiung Village.
