Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the socialization of the Duolingo application in English teaching at SDN 4 Mukiran and to assess its results, challenges, and implications for teaching and learning practices. The background of this research began with the need to master a foreign language in the digital era and the potential of gamified learning applications as a teaching method. This study used a case study with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data were collected through documentation of classroom and learning activities, teacher notes, and Duolingo usage records (directly observed by 29 participants) during the intervention period. The results showed that the socialization was well-structured and attendance was high during offline sessions; participants experienced an increase in basic English vocabulary, increased motivation to learn, and began practicing independently (10 to 15 minutes of independent practice per day in some cases). Key issues identified included a lack of hardware and internet connectivity, and limited software capabilities for developing advanced oral language skills. Implications of this study suggest that Duolingo should be used as a complementary tool in a blended learning framework, in addition to improving the accessibility of teaching and learning facilities, teacher training, and parental involvement to increase application utilization.
