Abstract

This study investigates the influence of peer social support on emotion regulation among migrant students in Medan, Indonesia. Migrant students often face a range of adaptation challenges, including adjusting to new social environments, managing academic demands, and dealing with feelings of homesickness. These experiences can lead to increased levels of stress and anxiety, making effective emotion regulation a critical psychological skill. The research adopts an associative quantitative approach and involves a sample of 350 migrant students enrolled in various universities across Medan. The sample was selected based on the Isaac and Michael table with a 5% margin of error. Data were collected using validated scales measuring peer social support and emotion regulation, both employing a Likert-scale format. Statistical analysis was conducted using simple linear regression via SPSS 27.0. The results show that peer social support has a significant positive effect on emotion regulation, as indicated by a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) is 0.113, meaning that peer social support accounts for 11.3% of the variance in emotion regulation, with the remaining 88.7% influenced by other factors. The regression equation Y = 33.595 + 0.253X reflects a direct positive relationship between the two variables. Most participants were categorized as having moderate levels of emotion regulation (82.9%) and high levels of peer social support (54.3%). These findings highlight the vital role of peer social support in enhancing the emotional well-being of migrant students and suggest that fostering strong peer connections can contribute to more effective emotional coping strategies in academic and social contexts

Abstract

Work engagement is a crucial factor that supports organizational effectiveness, particularly within public institutions that bear significant responsibilities in delivering public services. This study aimed to examine the relationship between Perceived Organizational Support (POS) and Work Engagement among Civil Servants (Pegawai Negeri Sipil PNS) at the Medan Center for Drug and Food Control (Balai Besar Pengawas Obat dan Makanan BBPOM). A quantitative approach with a correlational research design was employed. The study population consisted of 127 civil servants, all of whom were included as research participants using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Survey of Perceived Organizational Support (SPOS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation test. The findings revealed a positive and significant relationship between Perceived Organizational Support and Work Engagement (r = 0.266; p = 0.002). These results indicate that higher levels of perceived organizational support are associated with higher levels of employee work engagement. Descriptively, the majority of respondents reported high levels of POS (66.9%) and high levels of work engagement (73.2%). The findings suggest that organizational support manifested through fairness, concern for employee well-being, supervisory support, and recognition of employee contributions plays an important role in enhancing employees’ vigor, dedication, and involvement in their work. This study provides practical implications for BBPOM Medan to continuously strengthen organizational support as a strategic effort to improve employee work engagement and optimize the performance of civil servants.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media, particularly Instagram, has increased individuals' tendency to engage in appearance-based social comparison. Continuous exposure to idealized body images on Instagram may contribute to body dissatisfaction, especially among young adult women who are at a developmental stage characterized by heightened concern about physical appearance. This study aims to examine the effect of social comparison on body dissatisfaction among young adult female Instagram users in Medan City. This research employs a quantitative approach using a simple linear regression analysis. The study population consists of young adult female Instagram users residing in Medan City. The sample is selected using a non-probability sampling technique through a combination of purposive sampling and convenience sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Data are collected using a Social Comparison Scale developed based on the theory proposed by Schaefer and Thompson (2014) and a Body Dissatisfaction Scale adapted from the concept developed by Cash and Pruzinsky (2002). The collected data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, assumption tests, and simple linear regression analysis to examine the influence of the independent variable on the dependent variable. The proposed hypothesis states that higher levels of social comparison are associated with higher levels of body dissatisfaction among young adult female Instagram users in Medan City. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of psychological science, particularly in understanding the impact of social media use on women's body image, and to provide a reference for developing preventive interventions aimed at promoting positive body image and mental well-being among social media users.
