Abstract

Karungut is a creation that the Dayak people uphold as a great classical literature and is a kind of pantun or gurindam. The singer of karungut tells poems by mixing various legends, advices, admonitions, and warnings about everyday life. Indonesian society faces serious challenges related to nationalism, diversity, and the diminution of Pancasila values in the life of nation and state. This paper seeks to explore the potential of karungut to be utilized as one of the tools to instill and nurture the values of Pancasila in the life of society.

Abstract

This article discusses the myth of Saedah-Saenih from Indramayu as a form of oral literature that is alive and continues to be reproduced in various cultural mediums. Through a qualitative-ethnographic approach, this study analyzes written and oral texts, tarling performances, school plays, local films, and ritual practices on the Sewo Bridge. The results showed that despite variations in the details of the storytelling, the core motives—the cruel stepmother, the abandonment of the child, the supernatural pact, and the metamorphosis into the elements of nature—were always present as the basic structure of the narrative. Performative analysis shows that this myth is not only understood as a text, but also as a cultural event that involves interaction between speakers, audiences, and social spaces. Cultural ecology reveals the close connection between mythical figures and the landscape of the Sewo River, where the transformation into white crocodiles, trees, pring ori, and bale kambang confirms the role of myth as a cosmological map of the Indramayu people. From a social and gender point of view, the story reflects ambivalence: on the one hand it reinforces the stereotype of good and bad women, on the other hand it implies an attempt at symbolic resistance through the character of Saenih trying to get out of the snare of poverty. This myth serves a dual purpose: as an ideological device that affirms family values, morality, and religiosity, as well as an arena of cultural resistance that maintains local identity in the midst of modernization. Thus, the Saedah–Saenih myth shows that oral literature not only functions as a textual heritage, but also as a dynamic, meaningful, and relevant cultural practice in shaping the identity of contemporary society.

Abstract: The rapid development of the times has had a major influence on the assimilation of cultures between different owners in a cultural environment. The concern about losing the original regional cultural identity is an important issue and must be the subject of study, especially concerning community traditions. This research was conducted to explore and identify the hapumpung tradition that grows and develops in the community in Pulang Pisau Regency. This information will be collected and documented based on the classification of its forms and functions in the community. The research data is oral in nature so that the data collection method used in this study is the proficient method, namely collecting data (observing and studying) the conversations of informants about the hapumpung tradition. In its operation, the tapping technique is used as a basic technique, namely by tapping (recording) the informants' confessions/stories about the hapumpung tradition. In this case the writer is the key instrument who makes direct observations and records the data that has been listened to. Recording of informants' stories/confessions can be seen as an advanced technique and is called a recording technique and in this case the participation of the writer is receptive because he only listens to what his interlocutor tells him regarding the hapumpung tradition. The steps taken to analyze the data in this study were to describe the Hapumpung tradition based on the traditional values contained in it in accordance with the customary philosophy of the Dayak tribe in Bereng Kaligu Village and Bahu Palawa Village, Kahayan Hilir District, Pulang Pisau Regency. The Hapumpung tradition is an example of a community tradition that is still sustainable and is maintained by the community. The hapumpung tradition is a real manifestation of human interaction with other fellow human beings and it contains noble values in line with the philosophy of "Huma Betang".
