Abstract

Indonesian teen films play a significant role in shaping youth perspectives on identity, sexuality, and agency. While recent teen films such as Dua Garis Biru (2019), Yuni (2021), and Like & Share (2022) have explored progressive themes of teenage sexuality, many other Indonesian teen films continue to amplify gendered ideologies, both through their visual and narrative strategies. This paper examines Di Bawah Umur (2020) using Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze to analyze how cinematography, framing, and character representation contribute to the objectification of female characters. The findings show that although Di Bawah Umur presents itself as advocating adolescent reproductive health, it paradoxically sustains male-centric perspectives that undermine female agency. By foregrounding how patriarchal ideologies are subtly reproduced in youth-oriented cinema, this paper extends discussions in Indonesian film studies and gender representation. The result of this study offers a critical lens for scholars, educators, and filmmakers to interrogate how teen films construct gendered meanings and why such representations matter for young audiences in Indonesian society nowadays.

Abstract

Child marriage remains a critical issue in Central Java, including in Demak Regency, particularly due to cases of premarital pregnancy. One of the root causes is the lack of early sexual education. This Community Service Program aimed to raise awareness and understanding among parents—specifically PKK women cadres in RW 30, Batursari Village—on the importance of providing sexual education at home from an early age. The activity employed a participatory outreach method, beginning with the screening of short films on sexual education, followed by an educational session led by an educational psychologist. The results indicate an increase in participants’ understanding of early sexual education, along with a stronger readiness to discuss the topic openly with their children or grandchildren. The use of film proved effective in building empathy and served as an emotional bridge to open dialogue. This program demonstrates that media and communication-based interventions, when applied contextually and sensitively, can help shift public perception on issues still widely considered taboo. Abstrak—Pernikahan anak masih menjadi isu yang mengkhawatirkan di Jawa Tengah, termasuk di Kabupaten Demak, terutama akibat kehamilan di luar nikah. Minimnya pendidikan seksual sejak dini menjadi salah satu penyebab utama. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman dan kesadaran orang tua, khususnya ibu-ibu kader PKK RW 30 Kelurahan Batursari, tentang pentingnya memberikan pendidikan seksual sejak dini di lingkungan keluarga. Kegiatan ini menggunakan metode penyuluhan berbasis partisipatif yang diawali dengan pemutaran film pendek bertema pendidikan seksual, dilanjutkan dengan sesi penyuluhan oleh psikolog pendidikan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman peserta terhadap pentingnya pendidikan seksual sejak dini, serta tumbuhnya kesiapan untuk mulai membicarakan topik tersebut secara terbuka dengan anak atau cucu. Film terbukti efektif membangun empati dan menjadi jembatan emosional untuk membuka ruang diskusi. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa intervensi berbasis media dan komunikasi yang sensitif konteks dapat mendorong perubahan persepsi masyarakat terhadap isu yang selama ini dianggap tabu. Kata Kunci— media film, pendidikan seksual sejak dini, penyuluhan partisipatif, peran orang tua, pernikahan anak.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychological motives and gratifications that underlie Generation Z’s consumption of user-generated dashcam videos on social media, using the Uses and Gratifications Theory as the guiding framework. A qualitative descriptive design with a phenomenological approach was employed to explore participants lived media experiences. Nine Generation Z individuals aged 18–21 years were selected as digital natives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring motivational patterns. The findings reveal eight dominant viewing motives: passing time, companionship, escape, enjoyment, social interaction, relaxation, information acquisition, and excitement. The results indicate that dashcam video consumption reflects a multifaceted media use pattern in which viewers pursue both utilitarian benefits, such as road safety awareness, and emotional gratification. The study confirms the applicability of the Uses and Gratifications Theory to emerging user-generated audiovisual content. Dashcam viewers function as active media users who selectively engage with niche content to satisfy specific psychological and informational needs, highlighting the evolving dynamics of digital media consumption among Generation Z.
